Trekking Up Takao

For the last day of the 2023 new year’s break, Kangaeroo and Co. headed up to the delightful Mount Takao in Hachioji.

Leaving late in the morning, a short trip by bus and train had us at the foot of the mountain.

A healthy walk of little over an hour had Kangaeroo at the peak.

Normally, Mount Takao affords an amazing view of Mount Fuji.

But this time, the clouds that frequently cover the iconic Japanese mountain won the day, but the view was still magnificent.

A bowl of soba noodles on the top of the mountain, then back down the hill, this time catching a chairlift.

And also copping a view of Kangaeroo Corner (perhaps?) from up on high.

Went shopping and was still home before the sun went down.

Didn’t stop an anxious night of worry about how I am going to be harassed after going back to work.

    Wonderful Weekend Of Superb Cycling

Blessed with outstanding weather and lucky schedule breaks, I’ve just finished an amazing three-day weekend of cycling. I got to get on the bike as part of a cycling club’s call for riders to share their cycling experiences. My duties to the local estate threatened to put paid to my riding over the weekend, but things worked out and I could ride on all three days of the event. Today was the highlight, and I was supposed to lead a ride from Tokyo Station to Inokashira Park in Kichijoji. We were to follow the delightful Kanda River cycling course, which weaves through the central city, through the leafy suburbs and…

  • Biwaichi Takes the Wind from Our Sails

Having completed about two-thirds of a circumnavigation of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake, the final day was supposed to be an easy jaunt to the train station and a comfortable ride home to Tokyo for the Kangaeroo crew. “Ha, ha,” laughed the devil. On paper, the last leg of the Biwaichi circumnavigation was a mere 60 kilometers on a flat course, nearly all of which was isolated bike tracks. For the first hour, that was precisely what Kanageroo and the missus got as they headed out of Seta and off toward Hikone. The bitter taste of a terrible time at the Royal Oak Shiga slowly dissipating as we rode along…

Zen, And The Art Of the Brompton Community…

Or, Fold-ups, Fears, Foul-ups, Fuss, Faffing And Fun… After weeks of sunny weather (and heat), rain and drizzle came as a bit of a shock, but with a packed schedule there was little time to mess around. I slept later than usual and woke to rain, which made me suspect there would be no Brompton meeting at Tachikawa event today. But I checked the Instagram account of the event organiser, and she was keen for it to go ahead. Having yet to visit under her auspices and after pledging to myself that I would make every effort to do so this month, I prepared my Brompton bicycle to take me…

  • Indescribable Ecstasy of a Tiger Triumph

Richmond are Australian Rules football champions of the world! After 37 years! The feeling of joy is indescribable. Sheer, utter, unadulterated bliss does not do the feeling justice. Ecstasy doesn’t come close. Decades of disappointment, anger, despair, longing, envy, mistakes, yearning, praying, desperation were all lifted in a handful of minutes and shared with hundreds of thousands. Commiserations to the Adelaide Crows. What a fabulous team the Crows are. Like the Tigers, their time will come. Hopefully after the Tigers have established a couple of dynasties and become the team most hated by other teams again.

  • 離婚ベント同士!

Fate smiled broadly on me today as I finally dragged myself out on the recumbent (or the rikonbento as we’ve come to call it), and was rewarded by getting a meeting I had yearned for years. Following yesterday’s glorious weather and my most recent viewing of a weather forecast showing us to be in store for more of the same, I woke with high expectations. I was shattered, then, to see it had rained overnight and it was cool, overcast and bleak. We’d transplanted the carefully cultivated seedlings yesterday based on the weather reports only to go out and have a sweltering sun pound down on them and then followed…
