Acerbic Aussie comedian Kate Hanley Corley‘s razor sharp wit got a cosmopolitan crowd (including superfans who traveled to Japan just to see her) at the Tokyo Comedy Club guffawing loudly. The comedian on a whirlwind tour of Japan put on a rapid-fire display of comedy focused on love, marriage, life and motherhood, using flawless delivery to tap into French, German and Swedish influences at times and touch a nerve with a multicultural crowd including Neddie* from Norwich, Chie* from Chofu, Patty* from Paris and Dorothy* from Kansas, enrupturing all comers. And commas**. She really had her finger on the pulse–and…

Searing summer made for some delightful cycling, with seemingly less rainy than is normal for this time of year. But I also got to ride to see an exhibition of the Rolling Stones being put on in Setagaya, but it wasn’t as good as the show for Bowie a few years’ back. Our new years started off with the amazing David Bowie Is exhibition in Tennozu Isle, an saw me doffing the balaclava to ride my bike in the bloody cold. Bowie loved Japan and had a home in Australia, so he linked both countries. I’m enjoying going to distant places, and having a fold-up affords me the option of getting on the train if I can’t be bothered riding home. I wish I’d gotten into cycling much earlier as it allows you to see an entirely different world. Life is good at the moment, and I get the feeling this is…

Work slowed down and it was a little easier to enjoy life, which allowed for stopping to smell the roses and capturing such opportunities as a rainbow shining above the Tokyo Mosque and beefing up Bargearse the bike. Mrs. Kangaeroo and I also got to visit an exhibition by the delightful Kyoichi Tsuzuki, who has been chronicalling Japan’s quirky side for decides. He was showing displays from hihokan, the now vanishing but once almost ubiquitous sex museums across Japan. Bargearse, meanwhile, my erstwhile fat bike, got an upgrade with tiger decorations, taking over from a predecessor pedallar that piqued my…

A power pole near work gave some good advice for us in the busy time, which falls right in the rainy season. There’s not much free time at the moment. I did get to see some yabusame, horseback archery. And managed to catch some art on show near the office. Mrs. Kangaeroo and I had the trip of a lifetime visiting France, which was just magnificent from top to bottom. I’d never have taken a trip like this without Mrs. Kangaeroo’s inspiration, so I thank her from the bottom of my heart. It’s hard to believe that I was deeply disappointed to leave our old workplace near Odaiba because I loved the walk across the Rainbow Bridge but the art-filled district of Aoyama where I work now is really making up for it. I love wandering the streets at lunchtime to find little nooks and crannies filled with unexpected beauties, and the Aoyama area, one of Tokyo’s trendiest, really puts them on show. I’m only a few minutes’ walk away from the wonderful (and free) Spiral art gallery and cafe, which regularly puts on outstanding displays. I remember when I shared my…

Hard to believe we’re a month into the halfway point of the 2010s. It’s been a great start. Work is challenging and enjoying. But I really love the people I work with. And the company I work for is also great. I also get to wander through the streets of Aoyama during breaks. It’s an awesome area to work in. Rei Ozawa told me she would love to work around here. I was hesitant at first, but now I understand why. My workmate arranges Wednesday team lunches at a different nearby restaurant every week and it’s absolutely awesome. Related posts:…
