Did Japan Inspire Australia to Choose National Living Treasures?

Puppeteer Noriko Nishimoto had been declared a treasure by Western Australia

Australia’s National Living Treasures celebrate remarkable Australians. Japan’s Living National Treasures protect traditional masters. The two honours are different—but they may be connected by an idea that travelled across the Pacific.

Japan Had the Idea First

After the Second World War, Japan faced an urgent question.

How could traditional arts survive in a rapidly modernising society?

The answer was to recognise exceptional craftspeople and performers as Living National Treasures, helping preserve skills that might otherwise disappear.

Australia Took a Different Path

When Australia’s National Trust introduced its National Living Treasures in 1997, the goal was different.

Instead of recognising only traditional artists, Australians voted for people whose contributions had enriched national life.

Scientists, musicians, sportspeople and community leaders could all be honoured.

In some parts of Australia, the answer is clear.

The Western Australian State Living Treasures awards openly acknowledge that their concept originated in Japan’s post-war Living National Treasure system.

The idea was adapted—not copied—to suit Australian culture.

Celebrating People Who Give Back

Despite their differences, both countries share an important belief.

Some people preserve far more than their own careers.

They pass on knowledge, inspire others and strengthen their communities.

That is something worth celebrating.

An Unknown Nichigo Story

Few Australians realise that one of the world’s earliest “Living Treasure” ideas came from Japan.

Fewer still know that Australian cultural organisations have acknowledged that influence.

It is a reminder that friendship between nations is not built only through trade or diplomacy.

Sometimes, ideas travel just as successfully as people.

Did You Know?

Japan’s Living National Treasure system has inspired similar recognition programmes in several countries. Cultural heritage experts describe Japan’s model as one of the world’s most influential approaches to safeguarding traditional skills.

Atlantis Marine Park

Atlantis Marine Park on the outskirts of the Western Australian capital of Perth would have to be one of the less successful — and lesser-known — projects that Australian and Japanese organizations have carried out together down through the years. Atlantis Marine Park was a marine mammal park set up in 1981 by Alan Bond, a business tycoon and Australian of the Year who would become Australia’s richest person and a criminal around his halycon days in the 1980s, and Tokyu Corporation, a Japanese general contractor. Perth was growing rapidly. Blessed with a sun-drenched climate, experts forecast what was then regarded as the world’s remotest city was…

Why Did Australians Fall in Love with Niseko?

For many Australians today, Niseko is synonymous with powder snow, winter holidays and a taste of Japan. Yet few realise that Australians played a significant role in introducing this once-quiet corner of Hokkaido to the wider world. The story of Australians and Niseko is not simply about skiing. It is a story of curiosity, cultural exchange and the growing friendship between Australia and Japan. A Mountain Hidden in Plain Sight Long before Niseko became an international ski destination, it was primarily known to Japanese skiers. Blessed with abundant snowfall thanks to weather systems crossing the Sea of Japan, the region offered conditions unlike almost anywhere else on…

    Goodbye Possums…

Barry Humphries, the creator of characters such as Dame Edna Everage – the Moonee Ponds housewife famous for her flamboyance and shouted greeting of “Hello Possums” – Sir Les Patterson and Sandy Stone, and himself an entertainer and icon of Straya in many parts of the world, has passed away. Humphries died aged 89 on Saturday following complications from a recent hip surgery. Personally, I wasn’t a great fan of the Moonee Ponds housewife — Dame Edna Average is my name for her — but she had her moments and was a wonderful example of Humphries’ acerbic, anti-Establishment wit that Australian author Kathy Lette described this morning as his brilliance…

Australian Ambassador Urges Japanese TPP Involvement

Australian Ambassador to Japan Bruce Miller has implored Japan to actively engage in negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Miller, during an interview with a Japanese newspaper during the week, called the relationship between the two countries a “win-win” one, then went on to urge Japan to grow, saying that Asia could not grow without Japan. Miller spoke to the newspaper about the recently released white paper, “Australia in the Asian Century,” in which Japan was named as an important partner for Australia. Miller said that Australia can contribute to Asia in many ways, helping with economic growth through the stable supply of natural resources and contributing to regional security….
