Australia’s ‘Voice’ So Close Yet So Far To Japan

John Farnham is probably the most successful solo male singer Australia has ever produced. Despite decades of Australia producing performers who achieved global superstardom, Farnham never quite joined their ranks. But he came tantalizingly close early in his career with a launchpad from Japan.

Farnham has long been “The Voice” of Australian pop music. The now-retired star is renowned in Australia almost without exception for at least two things: a singing capacity so great he is commonly referred to as “The Voice;” and for being a delightfully warm and friendly person. When prolific Aussie songwriter Brian Cadd penned the powerful “Don’t You Know It’s Magic” and earned entry as Australia’s entrant in the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo ’72 he was allowed to ask a singer to perform his tune. Farnham’s voice and status as one of Australia’s hottest performers at the time.

カッドが書いた力強い曲「Don’t You Know It’s Magic」が、1972年の「第3回 世界歌謡祭」

“This was a huge moment for me, as you can imagine,” Cadd would write decades later. “I’d never even been to America, much less somewhere as mind-blowing as Japan.” Cadd explains the process behind selecting Farnham in the video below.

Playing live at the Budokan. Cadd and Farnham would, however, be the ones blowing minds as the arrived in the Japanese capital in November 1972 to compete in the World Popular Song Festival, which the Yamaha Music Foundation was holding for the third time. Yamaha would hold the contest yearly from 1970 to 1987 (when it was won by Australian act Pseudo Echo) and then one last in 1989. When Farnham got there, though, the festival was still in its fledgling days, but he would dazzle in the three-day contest held at the Nippon Budokan from Nov. 17-19, 1972.

Letting loose with magic for a shot at stardom. Farnham let rip with a fantastic rendition of Cadd’s hastily written but moving song in the first day preliminary round, qualifying for the Sunday, Nov. 19 final. He beat some pretty handy performers, including an already internationally established star in Neil Sedaka and a group of Swedes called ABBA performing a tune written by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who would later go on to forge pretty reasonable careers.

Farnham’s performance in the final

Video footage of the contest (including Farnham from 2:24) is can be seen via the British Pathe archives.

Coming home with a prize after belting out a beauty. Farnham continued his good form, not quite reaching the pinnacle, but being awarded the Most Outstanding Performance of a Composition, one of the runners-up prizes. As the composer, Cadd won the then princely sum of US$1,000, and Farnham, as the singer, half that amount. Both also received certificates and gold medals. More importantly, they gained widespread exposure in what was then the world’s second-largest music market and nationwide coverage through national broadcaster NHK, which beamed the event live to Japanese homes. A double album comprised of live performances from the final would eventually be compiled, but Yamaha did not put it out for sale.

(Most Outstanding Performance of a Composition)」を受賞します。

Over and out in Japan despite the shot at bigger things. Given the opportunity to launch a big break from Japan as bands like Queen and Cheap Trick would do later in the decade, his 1972 triumph was pretty much it for Farnham in Japan. And for some unknown reason, he would never achieve the status overseas to match his almost mythical position in Australia.

Farnham an eternal superstar, but only on a local level. The 1970s would be kind to Farnham in Australia as he continued to rack up hit songs and TV shows, but his popularity waned early the following decade. He had a stint as the lead singer of the Little River Band, which had become a major global act but also went on a downward trajectory with Farnham behind the mike. Solo again in 1986, Farnham released “You’re The Voice,” which became a phenomenal hit. “Whispering Jack,” the album from which the single was taken, remains the best-selling album in history by an Australian in Australia. It would propel Farnham back to the top rank of Aussie singers, where he would remain for the rest of his career, which appears to have come to an end after he contracted cancer in 2022. Yet the album barely raised a ripple overseas.

A promising start that fizzled. Farnham had a chance to be Big in Japan, but it never eventuated. His presence in Japan is real and documented, notably by a Japanese teacher located in Australia, but that he does not appear to have been treated as a long-established mainstream star on the scale of domestic Japanese idols. Rather, he’s known as an overseas (notably Australian) artist known by some to have appeared and won a prize at a major Japanese festival.

The World Popular Song Festival, also known as Yamaha Music Festival and unofficially as the “Oriental Eurovision,” was an international song contest held from 1970 until 1989. It was organised by the Yamaha Music Foundation.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott are among the large number of politicians from all parts of the political spectrum to take time off from campaigning for the Sept. 7 election to appear in a music video for pub band Super Best Friends‘ new song, Round and Round!, according to News Ltd. reports. The video is probably an example of Australian humor, but is a world apart from the gravity of the country’s situation. With an election just around the corner, something like this would be unthinkable in Japan. In Australia, though, they’re probably doing it because of the election…

Australian Football’s Tokyo Area ‘Samurai’ Off to the World Cup

Australia rarely makes the news in Japan, so it’s interesting to see it on the front page of the Asahi newspaper June 4 evening edition. The story is about Japan’s Aussie Rules team, the Samurais, who’ll be battling it out in the International Cup starting from June 8. Japan has a really small, but thriving, Australian Rules competition, with two leagues (including several all-Japanese teams), the Eastern League, centering on Tokyo and surrounding areas, and the Western League, comprising Osaka and Nagoya. Here’s an excerpt from the Asahi report: A translation: Just as the soccer World Cup is about to hit us, another football world championship — this one…

Music As A Bogan Cultural Element

Bogan culture has an extremely strong musical component. The canonical soundtrack includes: And here we encounter another great paradox. Some music associated with bogan culture is highly sophisticated musically and enormously influential internationally. AC/DC, for example, isn’t culturally insignificant because bogans love them. Quite the opposite. The music becomes part of a national mythology. Triple J even held a National Bogan Day in 2002, celebrating the stereotype with music including Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo and AC/DC. So “bogan music” isn’t necessarily bad music. It is music that has become culturally associated with unpretentious Australian masculinity and working-class authenticity.

  • Bringing a Western Beat to Japan

For some reason, Japanese artists covering Western songs has also held something of a fascination for me. I’m not really attuned to hit charts, nor really have been. And music isn’t one of my great loves, though I have an appreciation for pretty much any type of tune. Perhaps my liking for the out-of-the-ordinary stems from the Aussie DNA, which seems to have a likeness for the novelty song, with national and international No. 1 hits during my lifetime Down Under including the likes of I’ve Been Everywhere, A Pub with No Beer, A Redback on the Toilet Seat, Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport, Rak Off Normie, The Newcastle Song,…

Six White Boomers

SIX WHITE BOOMERS Early on one Christmas Day, a Joey Kanga-roo, Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo. Mummy, where’s my mummy? They’ve taken her a-way. We’ll help you find your mummy, son. Hop up on the sleigh. Up beside the bag of toys little Joey hopped, But they hadn’t gone far when Santa stopped. Unharnessed all the reindeer and Joey wondered why, Then he heard a far off booming in the sky. Six white boomers, snow white boomers, Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun. Six white boomers, snow white boomers, On his Australian run. Pretty…
