Why Did a Japanese Potter Choose a Tiny Aussie Country Town?

When Japanese ceramic artist Tatsuzo Shimaoka visited Australia, he wasn’t looking for fame. Instead, he helped inspire generations of Australian potters through workshops, demonstrations and friendships. His influence can still be found in studios across the country today.

A Living National Treasure

Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919–2007) was one of Japan’s most respected ceramic artists.

In 1996, he was designated a Living National Treasure for his mastery of traditional pottery techniques.

His work combined craftsmanship with humility—a combination that resonated strongly with Australian potters.

Sharing, Not Teaching

During his visits to Australia, Shimaoka gave demonstrations and workshops rather than formal lectures.

He encouraged artists to develop their own styles instead of copying Japanese traditions.

It was an exchange of ideas, not a one-way lesson.

Friendships Fired in Clay

Australian ceramic artists welcomed Shimaoka into their studios and homes.

They discussed kilns, glazes and local clays.

Those conversations often continued long after the pottery had cooled.

Many lifelong friendships began beside a potter’s wheel.

A Lasting Legacy

Today, many Australian potters still acknowledge the influence of Japanese ceramic traditions.

Some studied directly with Japanese masters.

Others were inspired by artists such as Shimaoka, who believed that sharing knowledge strengthened everyone.

An Unknown Nichigo Story

Most Australians have never heard of Tatsuzo Shimaoka.

Yet his influence quietly lives on in pottery studios across the country.

Sometimes, friendship between nations is shaped not by politicians, but by artists willing to share their craft.

Did You Know?

The Japan-Australia Link To The Great Train Robbery

Ronnie Biggs and the Great Train Robbery were pretty well-known among my generation of Australians growing up, and recognition of the famous long-term fugitive was enough in Japan for his 2014 death to be widely reported. What is less established, however, is that both Japan and Australia have a much closer connection to the crook than many in either country know. Biggs was one of a gang of about 16 people who carried out the Great Train Robbery in 1963, making off with 2.61 million pounds (worth about 12.16 billion yen today). Biggs used his share of the haul to pay for almost 40 years on the run, most famously…

Big Golden Guitar Tourist Center
