At about the precise moment this post goes online, England and Australia will be fighting it out for the Ashes in Brisbane, Australia, the long-awaited first Ashes Test Match in Australia for four years.

Cricket is Australia’s national summer sport (and England’s…). The first Test between England and Australia in 1877 became the first official international match, and the two countries have hosted each other at roughly two-year intervals since, except during wartime. Since 1882, they have fought for The Ashes, officially the “remains of English cricket.” The Ashes came about in response to an unexpected Australian victory over England in 1882 when an obituary mourning the death of English cricket was placed in a newspaper, noting “the body will be cremated and the Ashes taken to Australia.” The obituary touched a nerve in both countries and The Ashes tradition was born, becoming cricket’s oldest, most traditional rivalry and one that attracts the attention of cricket followers worldwide.

Cricket is played in over 100 countries, but few Japanese know about it. But there are actually cricket leagues in Japan and the national team plays World Cup qualifiers, though it has yet to progress to the finals. Over 1,000 people play cricket in Japan, which has its headquarters at the base of Mount Fuji in Shizuoka. For more about cricket in Japan, please visit the Japan Cricket Association website. It should be noted that the Japanese women’s team led by Ema Kuribayashi took out the bronze medal in the Asian Games held in Guangchou, China, defeating the hosts in the fight for third place.

Like Strine, cricket has its own peculiar vocabulary, and a lot more other eccentricities, though these will be covered later in separate posts. In the meantime, an anonymous English writer in Britain in the 1970s came up with the explanation of cricket below. The English is as indecipherable as the Japanese, but frighteningly, would be obvious to those familiar with cricket.

Cricket: As explained to a newcomer…

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he’s out he comes in and the next man goes in until he’s out. When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay all out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

  • Google オートコレクト Putting the シティ in Aussie Cities

Sydney is expensive Melbourne is better than Sydney Adelaide is a hole Darwin is my homeboy Brisbane is boring Perth is my city and I love it Hobart is the captial of which Australian state? Brace Yourself, Sydney…Here Comes Kyary Pyamu Pyamu

Colorful Japanese entertainer Kyary Pyamu Pyamu will play one show in Australia later this month as part of her Nanda Collection World Tour 2014. Demand to see the performer probably best known for her flamboyant 2011 viral video “Pon Pon Pon” has been enormous and her only Australian show on March 23 was shifted from Sydney’s Metro Theater to the considerably larger UNSW Roundhouse. The often infantile 21-year-old whose full stage name is Caroline Charonplop Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (her real name is Kiriko Takemura) is currently among the best-selling contemporary performers and is easily Japan’s best-known singer among 20-somethings outside of her homeland. Although Kyary Pyamu Pyamu has a reputation…

  • Tickle The Tonsils(ティックル・ザ・トンソルズ)とは?

オーストラリア人が “That’ll tickle your tonsils!” This cold beer will really tickle your tonsils.

  • Spruik/

Spruik Australian English To advertise or promote a service or product. Somebody who does this is a spruiker. The name is also given to street-side touts who try to entice people into clubs, restaurants or other entertainment establishments. Plain English To plug, tout, harangue or sell and promote aggressively.
