「フェーマスグラウス（Famous Grouse)」は世界中で有名なウィスキーであり、grouseは米・英語圏ではライチョウの意味だけど、オージー英語になると完全に意味が異なる。さて、どのように？

　Outside of Australia, grouse is the name of a bird, most notably the one that gives its name to the globally recognized whiskey Famous Grouse. But what happens when the word gets Down Under?

    豪キャブラリー： Smoko

    Smokoは典型的なオージー英語であり、典型的なオーストラリア人の行動を示す言葉でもある。厳密に言えば「一服」の意味。ニュアンスも全く同じだが、、、オーストラリアは禁煙大国のため、職場での喫煙が禁じられ、実際に仕事の一休みの時タバコを吸う人はほとんどない。しかし、喫煙が主流だった頃の流れからこの言葉は今に至っても使われている。

    「牛糞チョコ」が南豪で大ヒット中！

    　メルバ・チョコ（南オーストラリア州本部）販売の「カウパット（牛糞）チョコ」が大ヒット中、と同社が発表した。 　もちろん、本物の牛糞で製作されている訳がないが、同社がそれをモチーフに丸くて、ペタンコ激似のチョコを製菓している。同社によると、大ヒット商品だ。 　実は、牛糞が英語を言語としてちょっとした面白い存在。（オーストラリアを含む）英語圏ではカウパット(cowpat)というが、米語圏でカウパッド(cowpad)という。 　世界各国では牛糞は実際に意外と役に立つ。南アジア諸国では燃料及び発電に使われている。また、アフリカでは虫除けか自宅用の絶縁材として利用する場合が多い。なお、欧米ではカウパット投げやカウパットビンゴなどといって遊びにも度々登場する。 　オーストラリアでは牛が外来種であるため、牛糞の自然処理法は存在しなかった。そこで、オーストラリア最大科学研究開発期間である連邦科学産業研究機構（ＣＳＩＲＯ）が豪州糞虫計画を１９５０年代に始まり、数十年かけて牛糞の自然処理法として糞虫を導入し、環境的な被害を最小限に止まりながら見事に成功を果たした。 メルバ・チョコレート工場の風景（豪テレビ）

    Japan has become pretty much synonymous with high quality construction, but that didn’t prove to be in what was supposed to be a star project in Melbourne but ended up being more of a black hole.     Japanese have been legally eating kangaroo for longer than most Australians. Kangaroo meat was imported to Japan and being served in Tokyo restaurants from 1988, five years before meat from the national symbol was legalized for consumption by Australians in all states other than South Australia, where kangaroo could be eaten legally from 1980. (Indigenous Australians had continued eating kangaroo, a traditional food, regardless of the ban.)
