How Did a Japanese Celebrity Wedding Spark Australia’s Honeymoon Boom?

In 1987, millions of Japanese watched one of the country’s biggest pop stars honeymoon in Australia. It wasn’t just celebrity gossip. It became one of the most successful tourism campaigns Australia had ever seen.

A Wedding Captivates Japan

When singer Hiromi Go married actress Yurie Nitani in 1987, it was one of Japan’s biggest entertainment stories.

The couple were household names, and public interest in their wedding was enormous.

Australia Saw an Opportunity

The Australian Tourist Commission recognised an opportunity.

Instead of simply advertising beaches and sunshine, it invited the newlyweds to spend their honeymoon in Australia.

Their journey was filmed for Japanese television.

Millions Watched Australia

Viewers didn’t just see celebrities.

They saw the Great Barrier Reef, wide beaches, wildlife and relaxed Australian hospitality.

Australia became more than a distant country.

It became a dream honeymoon destination.

The Australia Boom

The campaign’s success was remarkable.

A Japanese government-supported tourism study later identified the broadcast as helping generate a major “Australia boom” in Japan.

It also noted that cooperation between television networks, airlines and tourism authorities was essential to its success.

Beyond the Honeymoon

During the late 1980s and 1990s, Japanese visitor numbers to Australia grew dramatically.

Many travellers who first dreamed of Australia as honeymooners later returned with children or friends.

For countless Japanese families, Australia became a place filled with happy memories.

An Unknown Nichigo Story

Tourism campaigns usually promote destinations.

This one promoted a love story.

By inviting two newlyweds to begin their married life in Australia, tourism officials created something much bigger than a successful advertisement.

They helped introduce a generation of Japanese to Australia.

What’s The History of Sister City Relationships Between Australia And Japan?

Long before exchange students, social media and Zoom meetings, two communities decided they wanted to become friends. Their decision sparked a movement that now links more than 100 Australian and Japanese cities and has brought hundreds of thousands of people together. One of the World’s Earliest Connections Australia and Japan’s first sister-city relationship was established in 1963 between Lismore, New South Wales, and Yamatotakada, Nara Prefecture. Only eighteen years had passed since the end of the Second World War. Bugger me, Bob!

  • Sayonara Stories

Mobile phones were starting to become a reality when Kangaeroo left Australia around this time of the year back in 1988, a year when the bicentennial of British colonization was marked. It was supposed to be a six-week holiday in Japan. Some 32 years later, that trip effectively hasn’t ended. Japan was in the news in Australia at the time of departure. Then Emperor Hirohito was in a critical condition (he would die shortly into the new year). The Japanese economy was booming and Japan seemed poised to take over leadership of the global business world. But, the more things change, the more they seem to stay the same. Like…

  • Zenshoen, A Story Of Cruel Tragedy

All sorts of memories flooded back to me during a brief ride through Tama Zenshoen, a gorgeous park in outer western Tokyo, but also home to a tragic and cruel past for Japan’s Hansen’s disease patients. Zenshoen is a leprosarium and for most of its history, the 115-year-old facility was shut off from the rest of the world and its inhabitants quarantined inside, sterilized and forbidden from associating with the outside world, largely based on 1951 testimony to the Diet by Kensuke Mitsuda, a staunch segregationist but also unfortunately Japan’s foremost expert on leprosy at the time. This continued for decades, even after it was known that Hansen’s disease was…

Little Girl’s Story Opens Door to Aussie Animal Boom in Japan

Back in the early ’80s Australia did not command a great deal of attention in Japan (to be honest, it still doesn’t command that great a presence to this day…) Things changed, however, with the launch of Lucy-May of the Southern Rainbow. Lucy-May of the Southern Rainbow was an anime by Nippon Animation that aired weekly from January 10 to December 26, 1982. The cartoon told the story of Lucy-May Popple and her family, who had emigrated from Yorkshire to live in Adelaide, Australia. The story was based on a book called Southern Rainbow by Australian author Phyllis Piddington. The anime would be translated into numerous languages and aired in…
