豪キャブラリー：Happy As Larry

Strine doesn’t really give itself over to hyperbole, which perhaps explains how a term can arise like “happy as Larry.” This Australian English saying simply means to be overjoyed, happy or completely satisfied. Though there are plenty of unfounded theories, precisely who or what the Larry referred to is a complete mystery.

　ストライン（オージー英語）って、大げさな言い回しはあまりしないんだけど、そのわりに happy as Larry なんて表現が生まれたのは面白い。意味は「めちゃくちゃ幸せ」「ご機嫌」「大満足」くらいのこと。いろんな説があるものの、この「ラリー」が誰なのか、何なのかは実はまったくの謎なんだ。

    　マンチェスターはイギリスの最も大きな都市のひとつである。伝統と歴史のある町である上に、スポーツの世界ではサッカーを中心に世界的なブランドにもなっている。オージー英語でも、マンチェスターはブランドになってはいるが、その意味がマンチェスター・ユナイテッド選手ルーニ―などと、かなりかけ離れている。 Manchester is one of Britain’s largest cities.     Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, probably the most-loved Australian children’s TV program in history, has turned 50 years old. The first episodes screened in Australia in February 1968 and the show remains popular to this day, though only three series comprising 91 episodes were made. The show premiered outside of Australia. Its run in Japan had effectively ended before Skippy showed in Australia, mainly because the series was made in color, which did not arrive in Australia until 1975.     Indigenous Australians have contributed richly to language on a global scale. This is especially through the names of creatures such as the kangaroo, koala, wombat, wallaby and dingo, all of which were originally Indigenous Australian words, but now used everywhere English is spoken, as well as being incorporated into other languages, including Japanese. 　オーストラリア原住民の言語は、世界的にも貢献している。カンガルー、コアラ、ウォンバットやディンゴなどの動物の名前は全て先住民語に由来し、現在は英語だけでなく日本語を含め世界各国で使われており、まさに「国際語」だ。
