Bloomin’ Bewdy!

It was the D-Day anniversary today and it sure felt like I was storming enemy territory for most of the day, but the fantastic flowers blooming in the garden warmed my soul.

And the magnificent Mrs. Kangaeroo took the ugliest flowers in the garden, the Australian native hops, chucked in a few snow in the summer blossoms and created a stunning bouquet! Words cannot describe her brilliance! I hope her terrible taste in men remains eternal.

  • Bromocalypse, Now!

As fate would have it, I got to ride my Brompton in a post-apocalyptic landscape over the weekend, making for some eerie-looking pics. It’s not the first time I have been able to ride through the area, but it was Brommie’s first chance to do so. Although the scenes appear post-apacolyptic (and I referred to them in that manner), it really wasn’t the case. We were in Tama Hills Recreation Area. I woke early, as is my wont, and got on the bike I had stored in the cabin where we had stayed. The camp area was deserted and the only noise was the morning calls of the many birds….

    豪キャブラリー: Slab

  • Bush Carpenters And The Aussies Who Can Fix Almost Anything

ほぼ何でも直してしまうオージーたちの“ブッシュ大工”の世界 Ask an Aussie bush carpenter to build you a shed and you might get a very confident answer. “Yeah, no worries. I can knock that up.” The bush carpenter is the sort of person who seems able to build, repair or modify almost anything with whatever happens to be lying around. bush carpenter Meaning Bush carpenter is an informal Australian expression for a rough-and-ready carpenter or handyman. It can describe someone who has learned through practical experience rather than formal training. It can also carry a humorous suggestion that the person considers himself a carpenter even though he has no formal qualification or licence. Example “He’s no qualified…

  • No Better Time To Ride In The Land Of The Rising Sun

Now’s about the best time of the year for me to cycle in Japan. Being an early riser, I hit the road just before the sun rises in the sky. The upshot is that I get to see some beautiful skies to start off most days. Today was a bonus as there were some delightfully whispy clouds, plenty of color and gradation to greet me and my bike. I stopped in a few different places to capture what I thought were increasingly beautiful scenes as I moved on. It was a bright start to something of a bright day. My finger has healed as well as it is going to….

  • Life Gets In The Way

I’ve never been good at dealing with life on life’s terms, and being a selfish and spoiled type, easily get down when I don’t get what I want. I got to experience that side of me again this week. My boss finally pushed through the severe pay cut she has been aiming at for the past couple of years. I’m now down to about 60% of the wage I was hired at a decade ago, with less than half the paid vacation, a much-reduced medical plan, no allowances and footing the bill for the company to produce the work it sells at a huge markup. I’m sure this situation is…

  • Rooted!

Having experimented with growing Aussie plants from seed last year, this year’s efforts have focused more on growing from cuttings and finally, from this morning, replicating the seed propagation experiment. Turns out that things are rooted, but not the way I had hoped. I started trying to grow cuttings from our extremely successful grevillea about two months ago. Following instructions online and from veterans, I took over a dozen cuttings from branches, added a growth-stimulating hormone powder to the ends, stuck them in pots filled with kanumatsuchi, watered them and covered the pots with plastic. I basically left the two pots I set up alone, only occasionally checking to see…
