日本語でも「スラブ」という言葉をよく使うだが、コンクリートなどの四角い塊しか思い浮かばないだろう。英語でも全く同じ意味でslabも使うがslabも同様な形が由来の独特なオージー英語のslabもある。それがビールのslabなのだ。一ケースを示し、写真を見ればだいたい納得するだろう。

Chiba Company Rapt To Choose A Roo For Wrapping
Kangaroos are the choice of a company symbol for packaging-materials trading company Kawawa Co., Ltd. from Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture. Kawawa chose to use a kangaroo to symbolize their operations because it represents “the spirit of wrapping,” according to the company’s website. Although the company has nothing to do with Australia, it chose to represent itself with the country’s national symbol because its pouch is a natural metaphor for wrapping, carrying with care, and protecting what’s inside. 恐竜だったことを思わせる豪巨鳥を称えるBig Cassowary
ダチョウ、エミューに次ぐ世界三番目大きいな鳥カソワリがクィーンズランド州北部ミッション・ビーチという町でオーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つとして同鳥を称えるBig Cassowaryがある。 Big Cassowaryの高さが約５メートルであり、本物の2.5倍ぐらいだ。カソワリは飛べない鳥であり、雑食性である。頭の上にヘルメットのような角があり、動きも食習慣も恐竜と鳥との繋がりを強く思わせてくれるだろう。 ミッション・ビーチにBig Cassowaryが作られている理由は同町周辺がカソワリの生息地であるためだ。 オーストラリアの子供たちには「カソワリが危ないぞ！」とよく言われ、人間を攻撃すると言われるし、この鳥の目付きも評判も「怖い」。が、実際に人間を攻撃した事件が記録上で僅か１件しかなく、それでも約90年前のことだった。Wikipediaによるとカソワリが本当に内気な鳥であるが人間などに恐れがあると感じれば自己防衛として攻撃して来るんだという。生息地の損失や人間が手で食べさせるため森から死の原因となる車などを接触する可能性が高くなることを理由にカソワリが絶滅危機にあり、オーストラリアで保護されている。 大きな地図で見る
