Angels Without Wings

Blessed by sublime weather, I got to experience the delight of helping out a canicross–canine cross country–and spent the day being surrounded by literally hundreds of doggos, thse glorious little angels without wings.

They were taking part in Dog Marathon 2025 Shonan Beach Canicross on Tsujido Beach in Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture.

There were four different races with owners running together with their pooches (at least in theory, as slogging it out on the beach is pretty touch work, even if you’ve got four legs, as would prove to be the case for many dogs).

It was an absolute delight, though, and I had a magnificent day.

Coming home wasn’t so grand, as the tubeless tire on my bike that is allegedly meant to be immune to punctures had a puncture.

Fortunately, good luck continued to follow me as I found a bike store that was open and could get it repaired, albeit at the mere cost of an arm and leg.

    Australia has a heart. It is also, rather oddly, called dead. “The Dead Heart” is an old expression for the arid interior of Australia. The phrase became particularly influential after geologist John Walter Gregory used it as the title of his 1906 book The Dead Heart of Australia, following his expedition around Lake Eyre.     Australiana for Australia Day

    Big Red Wins The Blue, But Still A Toot For Astuto

    I’ve finally got one of my 2025 goals back on track in what has been my most prolific month for cycling in several years, courtesy of a dry, hot July. This morning I caught up with my target of averaging 1,000 or more kilometers per month across the year. This distance is nothing near my cycling heyday when I would ride almost three times that length regularly, but it’s good enough with all the life circumstances going on.     豪キャブラリー：Crikey

    Crikeyはこの十数年でアメリカを中心に典型的なオージー英語の一つとなったが、実際にその一昔前までに死語になりつつあった。復活の理由は故スティーブ・アーウィン氏にあった。 　多くの日本人にとって「スティーブ・アーウィン」が反捕鯨団体シー・シェッパードが使う船の名前かもしれないので、あまりいい印象を持てないかもしれません。 　しかし、アーウィン氏は環境保全に熱心な方政治的に動くより「地球人」の一人みたいだった。陽気で明るく多くの人々に対してワニをはじめ多くのオーストラリア動物のことを世界中に紹介した。 　アーウィン氏は、1990年後半からアメリカのテレビで「Crocodile Hunter」としてオーストラリアの大自然を紹介する番組や映画で大ヒットをし、得た資金を使って家族が古くから運営したAustralia Zooの運営などに使った。同氏が撮影中動物を見たどたんに「crikey」と叫ぶ、近く彼のうたい文句となった。アーウィン氏の人気が高まるとともにその言葉が彼自身そしてオージー英語のシンボルの一つとなった。 　残念ながら5年前撮影中エイに刺されて他界へ。しかし、彼のおかげで「crikey」が不滅となり、現在オーストラリアで最も成功しているオンライン・ニュースサイト名にもなっている。

    魚、ワニをはじめクィーンズランド北部の様々なBig Things

    　オーストラリア北部にあるクィーンズランド州は、ある意味で「Big Things」聖地と言えるかもしれない。 　いろいろな理由がある。同州面積の大部分が熱帯雨林地に占めてあるため、気候に恵まれているということで観光地として最適である上にそもそも住民たちがbanana bender（バナナを曲げる人々）と（半分だけ冗談）呼ばれているので「Big Things」のようなキッチュ・意味不明の存在をそこに合っている気がしなくない。 　クィーンズランド北部では「Big Things」が特に被いと言っていいと思う。また、似ている物も多い。例えば、ビッグ・バラマンディは同地域に繁殖するバラマンディという魚を同州北部のノーマントン町とデイントリー町のいずれにもある。両町もビッグ・クロコダイルもある。 　面白いことにノーマントン町でもデイントリー町でもいずれのビッグ・バラマンディの大きさは高さ６メートルと幅２メートルとなっているが、どちらも外見的にかなり違う。バラマンディは、恐らくクィーンズランドで取得する魚の最も有名な魚だろう。 　各ビッグ・バラマンディとビッグ・クロコダイルのいずれも、「Big Things」らしく特に動いたり、面白いことをやったりするわけでもないが、あるだけでそこの町おこしなどのような存在がある。しかし、デイントリーのビッグ・バラマンディはバーベーキュー・ガーデンの入り口に設置してあり、ＰＲするという役割を果たしていると言える。 Daintree’s Big Barramundi View Larger Map Normanton’s Big Barramundi View Larger Map ノーマントン町へ（ビッグ・バラマンディの映像もあり） Big Barramundi BBQ Garden

  • Death Revival

    Today looks like it’s going to be all about Lazarus-like feats centered around reviving death in all sorts of ways. First there’s the Death Machine; the name I give to my recumbent bike because riding it always feels like it could be fatal with each ride. It needs a tune, new chain and brakes to get back to fighting fitness. Hopefully, this won’t lead to a chain-reaction effect requiring increasingly more parts and labor, as is often the case.
