    Hugh Jackman

Oh, no! What a Hugh-ge spelling mistake! Tokyo in Parramatta Video: Parramatta transformed into Tokyo

After an interminably long wait, it finally got warm this week, prompting me to spring into action. It was hard to believe that just last week Tokyo got blasted with heavy snow. Short sleeves and shorts were the watchword, even for typically well-covered types such as Mrs. Kangaeroo. A Bit of a Roo-ed Shock

Kangaroos have always taken center stage in this blog (which I started almost 13 years ago to try to tap into the then recent introduction of Australian English into TOEIC testing), so it was a bit rare yesterday when I had the chance to write about roos but didn’t (albeit giving prominence to quokkas, another member of the marsupial family). Yesterday, the Kangaeroos had a wonderful time at the Saitama Children’s Zoo, which has an Australian animal area., and attracted us because Mrs. Kangaeroo wanted to see its quokkas. I know a lot of people aren’t too keen on zoos, but I love them, even though I feel for the…

Aussie ‘X’ Gender Passports Given the Wako Treatment in Japan

Australia’s revolutionary passports have been given the Wako treatment in Japan. No, that’s not a spelling mistake (it’s pronounced Wah-Koh, not whacko), nor does it mean Down Under travel documents are being held up to ridicule. In fact, Wako University, a tertiary institution located in the outer Tokyo suburb of Machida, typically uses posters hung up in the carriages of capital area trains to provide a short lesson for commuters. The university’s current poster focuses on how Australia now deals with the issue of gender when it comes to issuing passports. The distinctive yellow posters, effectively an advertisement for the privately funded university, feature a kangaroo with joey and people…
