豪州ブランド車ホールデンが廃止へ

　オーストラリアの最も有名な車ブランドであったホールデンが2020年いっぱいで廃止となることは親会社であるジェネラルモーターズ社の17日発表で分かった。

　1908年に始まったオーストラリア国内製造が2017年に終わったが以降シボレー車が輸入されてホールデンブランドで販売された。

　しかし、販売数が伸び悩み、結局GMがホールデンブランドを廃止することを断行した。

　一時、オーストラリア製造業の象徴であったホールデン車が事実上存在しなくなる。

　販売終了後、約10年間メンテナンスのために200人程度を雇用する予定はしている、とGMがいう。

    　オーストラリア人数人が半分冗談で始まったチャリティ活動により11月は英語でNovemberで言わなくなりつつであり、Movemberとなるかもしれない。 　Movemberの「mo」はmoustache（唇ひげ）が由来。 約10年前オーストラリアで（具体的な場所の説が別れているが、、、）数人の男たちが11月になったらスポンサーを集めて唇ひげをそらないで、髭を伸ばして競争して得たお金をチャリティに寄付する事になった。 活動の目的は女性に比べて人命が短い男性に健康意識を持つように呼びかける。 　Movemberは2006年ごろまでオーストラリアのみの活動だったが、以降ニュージーランドか南アフリカをはじめ、いまで北欧・北米など世界中に広がっている。 　　日本は、、、まだだね。でも、時間の問題かな？ 　今年、カンタス航空も早速Movemberに積極的に参加し、オーストラリア国内線の飛行機などに髭をつけて飛んでいる。 Movember

    オージー英語らしくフットボールは全国ではfootyとして省略されている。しかし、そのフットボールがどんなfootyかが問題だ。 　オーストラリアの国家競技が豪式フットボール（Australian Rules Football)であり、一応全国でリーグ戦を行いながらも特に東南部のビクトリア、南オーストラリア州、タスマニア島、中央北部のノーザンテリトリー州、西の西オーストラリア州でダントツに人気。

    Fossickは古くから使われている独特なオージー英語であり、珍しく今でもよく使われている言葉だ。意味は、あっちこっちにものを探すことだ。由来はオーストラリアの19世紀での発展に大きく貢献したゴールド・ラッシュである。当時、金を探す人たちはfossickerと呼ばれ、その後金以外どんなものでも探すのがfossickするということになったようだが未だに鉱業に全く縁がない考えRooでも最初に思い浮かぶのが「金を探る」のが不思議でしょうがない。
