Summer is not always the most pleasant season in Tokyo as it’s stinking hot, humid and frequently raining.

Sometimes, though, nature turns on the charm and you get some delightful goodies.

This week’s sunrises have been precisely that.

Tjukurrpa, Terra Australis, New Zealand, EendrachtslandそしてAustraliaへ「オーストラリア」は、ラテン語で「南の大きな大陸」という意味だ。日本と同じようにオーストラリアも歴代国名も多数ある。数万年前から今でいうオーストラリアに住んだ先住民たちは「国」というコンセプトさえなかったので、何百もあった部族に暮らし国全体を理解することはなかった。その変わり、「夢期（ドリーミング）」ということがあった。その「夢期」は、世・存在やすべての物を含めて人それぞれ独自で解釈するすごく抽象的な意味があるが、その中「土」ようは「住む所」などの意味も含めた。その延長で「夢期」と「国」は、ある意味でイコールである。だとしたら、国名と「夢期」が同じであれば無理がない（まあ、あるけどさ、、、言いたいことがわかるよね）。言語も部族によって異なったため何百個もあったので当然言葉が違うが大きな部族の「夢期」の言葉はアレンテ族のTjukurrpa「ジュカーパ」が最もよく使われている例として挙げているじゃないかな？ヨーロッパ人が今のオーストラリアと接するようになるのは1606年のことだった。古代ローマ時代から地球の南に大きな大陸があるだろうと思われて「Terra Australis（南の土地）」と噂したが確実にその所があったかどうか検証できなかった。しかし、1606年にオランダ人探検家であるWillem Janszoonが今ウェイパというクイーンズランド州の都市であり、ヨーク岬半島に位置し、カーペンタリア湾に面する。乗務員10人が殺されたり、土地があまり良くなくすぐ去ってオランダ領東インドに戻ったが、探検した国をオランダのゼーラント州にちなんで「ニウ・ゼーラント」と名づけた。しかし、その名前が浸透しなかった（後になってオーストラリアの隣国であるニュー・ジーランドで使えるようになったが）。でも、数年間オーストラリアがニュー・ジーランドと呼ばれたのが事実だ。数年後の1612年10月。同じオランダ人Dirk Hartogが今のオーストラリア北西部にある世界遺産であるシャーク湾周辺に着陸し、3日間探検して初めて同国の一部の地図を作った。その上、別の名前を名づけた。それが自分の船をちなんで、「Eendrachtsland（Eendrachtsの国という意味）」だった。 17世紀前半ではTerra AustralisあるいはEendrachtslandと呼ばれたが、ヨーロッパ人が行くことがほとんどなかった。17世紀後半になると多くのオランダ人探検家がオーストラリアと接し、同国が「ニュー・ホランド（新オランダ）」と呼ばれるようになった。以降、「ニュー・ホランド」またはTerra Australisと呼ばれた。1770のキャプテン・クック探検及び1788年イギリスが植民地化した後口語では「ボタニー・ベイ(Botany Bay)」と呼ばれることもあったが19世紀に入るとやっと国名を、ラテン語の英語化である「オーストラリア（Australia）」にした。 1824年当時事実上オーストラリアを統治したイギリス海岸が正式国名を「オーストラリア」と認めた。当時、「オーストラリア」は、現在のニュー・ジーランドを含めたの意味だったが1901年オーストラリアの独立・ニュージーランド抜きの連邦化に伴い現在の使用となった。...

本州面積の半分以上ある射撃場で豪が世界宇宙開発の先がけを　宇宙開発に先がけた国でいえばオーストラリアを思い浮かぶ人がいないだろう。　初NASA所属日本人宇宙飛行士毛利衛氏が豪大学で博士号を取得したにも関わらず日本では、オーストラリアが宇宙開発に先がけた国だった意識が極めて少ない。実は、オーストラリアでもこのことがほとんど知られていない。でも、事実のだ！　旧ソ連、米国、フランスに次ぐオーストラリアが世界で4番目の宇宙開発用の打ち上げ地となった。　1967年11月29日米国が豪に与えたスパルタ・ロケットを南オーストラリア州にあるウーメラ試験場で打ち上げ、見事にオーストラリア初の人工衛星であるWRESAT（Weapons Research Establishment Satellite）を軌道に乗せた。　約4年後、同試験場が再びロケット打ち上げに関われ、今度はイギリスと共同で英国唯一人工衛星Prosperoがブラック・アローによってウーメラから打ち上げた。Prosperoが今でも起動に乗っている（けど、運用していない）。　以降、ウーメラ試験場でロケットの打ち上げがないものの宇宙開発関連業務が継続的に行っている。1980年まで射撃場として使用されたが閉鎖となった。　また、1990年に再開し、民間や商業的な非軍事の試験プログラムにも使われる。　1996年、宇宙開発事業団（NASDA）と航空宇宙技術研究所（NAL）（現在は両者統合して宇宙航空研究開発機構 (JAXA)）が、小型自動着陸実験機（ALFLEX）の飛行実験を行っている。さらにJAXAは、2002年（当時NAL）と2005年に小型超音速実験機（NEXST-1）の飛行実験を行っている。　2010年6月13日には、小惑星イトカワのサンプルを採取したJAXAの小惑星探査機「はやぶさ」（MUSES-C）のカプセル着陸地点としても使われた。　また、日本の大学も参加しているガンマ線天体物理学のための国際協力実験であるCANGAROO（Collaboration of Australia and Nippon for a GAmma Ray Observatory in the Outback）プロジェクトの望遠鏡が設置され、観測が継続されている。　ウーメラ試験場の面積は12.7万平方キロで、日本の本州(22.8万平方キロ)の半分より少し大きいほどの面積である。世界で最も広い陸上射撃場である。ウーメラ立入制限区域に隣接施設。ウーメラのネーミングは、オーストラリア先住民が槍を投げる時に使った補助道具が由来だ。ウーメラ試験場公式ウェブサイト（英語） Introduction to the CANGAROO Project（日本語）日豪共同宇宙開発事業CANGAROOサイト CANGAROOII CANGAROOIII...
豪有数標高が高いけど沈んでいる奇妙な山村　世界レベルで見ればオーストラリアが高い山がないが、東海岸の数千キロに渡りグレートディバイディング山脈という山脈があり、その一部がとっても不思議な山村が所在するスノウィー山脈もある。　昔オーストラリアで最も標高高い不思議な四つ小さな山村があったが、いずれも比較的に高い山に所在していたにも関わらずいずれも今水沈まれている。　「ええ？高い標高山村が下方向に流れるはずの水に沈まれる訳がない」と一瞬思ったらおかしくないが、原因は日本でもよく見る現象だ、、、ダムづくり。　ジンダバイン、タルビンゴ、タランガッタとアダミナビという山村が水力発電所建設計画だったスノウィー山脈水力発電所計画で沈没され、今同名の各村が元の場所とかなり離れている所にある。日本のような山が多い国ではちっとも珍しくない話だが、山が低くて割と平野が中心となっているオーストラリアでは極めて珍しい話だった。今では干ばつがあれば、古い町も再び現れてきたり、スキーの拠点となったりして、観光業に大きく観光業に貢献している。ちなみに、アダミナビには「Big Things」であるBig Troutがある。下記の映画が古いアダミナビの今を見るものだ。　スノウィー山脈水力発電所計画は1949年から1974年の間に続けた。ダム16ヶ所、水力発電所7ヶ所、トンネルやパイプなど225キロメートルに及び、オーストラリア最大土木インフラ計画だった。　同計画の建設にかかわった労働者約7割が移民だった。1950年代まで移民にかなり否定的なオーストラリアが英国植民地化した1788年以降初めて英語圏外の大量移民を受け入れて現在の多文化社会の出発点と呼ばれ、現代オーストラリアにはかり知らないほど大きく影響を与えたプロジェクトだった。 Our Drowned Town from George Evatt on Vimeo....
