Springing Into March And Marching Into Spring

Spring seems to have come a bit early this year; sort of. And I got to celebrate my return to cycling shoes amid glorious sunshine, warmth and conditions pretty much perfect for being on a bike.

From March 2020 through to August 2024, I wore cycling shoes more than any other type of footwear, and even since then it would be a good chance that I had maintained that record through to November 2025.

Then, I fell and broke my leg, and my orthopaedic surgeon and physio therapist had banned me from using cycling shoes as they require a jerking movement in the leg to unclip from the pedal, which the physicians felt would hinder my recovery.

I finally finished physio on Friday night and got the OK to wear cycling shoes again.

A prior commitment stopped me from putting on the shoes yesterday, then I had a task to get through that prevented me from going on my customary morning ride.

But I eventually got on my bike and enjoyed a leisurely trip along the Tama River down to Haneda Airport and back.

It was an absolute joy, and problem free!

For me, it was a wonderful way to usher in the spring, as we would judge it to be by Australian reckoning, where the seasons change on the first day of March, June, September and December. Generally, the northern hemisphere seems to regard the changing season to begin around the 20th day of those months.

To be honest, I reckon the northerners have gotten in right. But today was like spring for me, and that certainly put a spring in my step, albeit while my foot was clipped into a pedal.
