豪キャブラリー：Coathanger

Coathangerは、オージー英語の中では驚くほど多くの使い方がある。当然、英・米語と同じように「ハンガー」という意味に加えて「腕を伸ばして逆方向から来ている人を意図的にぶつける」という使い方も（主にスポーツ）ある。

　おまけ、オーストラリアのシンボルのひとつであるシドニー・ハーバー・ブリッジのニックネームがcoathangerである。その由来は、同橋がハンガーに似ているから来たのだ。

    Does Australia Celebrate ‘G’dayween’ Instead of Halloween?

    　今日は10月31日なので、それが多くの人にとって「ハロウィーン」という意味他ない。 　日本では近年ハロウィーンがだんだん大きくなっているようだが、今までどちらかというと子供やよっぽどアメリカに親密感を感じる人など一部を除いてほとんどの人にとってどうでもいいようなイベントだった。 　オーストラリアも同様だ。今でもそうかな？ 毎年、恒例の「オーストラリアでもハロウィーンがメジャーになりつつあるよ」と小売などを中心に言うが子供また小さな子供を持つ親以外ほとんどの人が気にしないという。 　　確かに、街中では飾りなどが見えるが、決した社会全体に大きなインパクトを与えるイベントと言い切れない。 　ちょっと驚いたのは、今日付けのnews.com.au読者投票ではハロウィーンのお菓子配りである「トリック・オー・トリート」に対して圧倒的に反対派が多い。 　ハロウィーン反対派の勢いが主に反米感情から生まれてくるという。 　ちなみに、「ハロウィーン」が英・米語の「Hello（ハロー）」と関係ない。由来が「神聖化する」という意味のhallowだ。11月1日がクリスト教が諸聖人の日を称えるので、その前夜祭だった。なので、ハローの代わりに使われているG’dayをとってG’dayweenというのはないのだ！！！！

    少なくとも動詞として使う場合、ストライン（オージー英語）では「conk」が人を殴る・ぶつける・小突くといった意味になる。名詞として使うと「鼻」という意味だ。 Conk, at least in its verb form in Strine, means to strike, hit, or punch, usually someone. Used as a noun, conk means nose. Example: Cripes, tell him off, but don’t bloody conk him. It could cause serious damage. 例： 「おいおい、文句は言っていいけど、絶対に殴ったりするなよ。マジで危ないからな。」

    豪キャブラリー： Cozzie

    Cozzieは典型的なオージー英語であり、典型的なオーストラリアのものでもある。多くの人にとってオーストラリア人の印象はライフセーバーである。そして、そのライフセーバーの制服と言うべきものがcozzieだ。そうだ！Cozzieは水着のことだ。死語のswimming costume「泳ぐ服装」のオージー英語らしい省略言葉だ。 　島大陸のオーストラリアは世界有数の水泳大国でもあり、有名なSpeedo水着はオーストラリア生まれだ。長年Speedo社は自社製水着をGreat Aussie Cozzieという語呂合わせしたコピーを使っていた。 　水泳大国らしくオージー英語では「水着」という意味の語彙が豊富であり、cozzie以外にswimwear, bathers, trunks, togsなどもある。

    Australia’s rugby team, the Wallabies, were ignominiously dumped from the 2019 Rugby World Cup that Japan is currently hosting (and being lauded for both its organization skills and the rousing performance of its unfancied team). The Wallabies lost badly to England in a quarter final, mostly because they were not good enough as a team. But Kangaeroo.com has also discovered another reason for the Wallabies’ woes.     Fair suck of the savは典型的なオージー英語表現だ。実は、独特なオージー英語の中では最も有名な表現の一つかもしれない。 　この表現は「均等機会を与えよう」と不当扱いされていると思っている人々が加害者と思っている人に対して言う表現だ。 　平等・均等的な社会と思っているオーストラリアでは非常に重要な表現となっている、、、にも関わらず直訳すると「私にもウィーナーを均等に吸わせてくれよ」となる。Savはsaveloyの省略であり、saveloyはウィーナー見たいなソーセージの一種だ。

    Rockmelons can be a bit of a trap for young players, because it’s a Strine saying for a fruit found pretty much all over the world. Note the distinctive orange texture of the rockmelon flesh. This distinguishes it from the cantaloupe Europeans eat, musk melon preferred by the Japanese and Americans and spansek found in southern Africa. All these fruits are bloody nice wherever you eat them, but the only fair dinkum rockmelons are in Australia, so that’s what makes it a 豪キャブラリー term. 　ストライン（オージー英語）で rockmelon と言うと、世界中どこにでもあるフルーツのことだから、初心者にはちょっとした落とし穴になる。果肉がオレンジ色なのが特徴で、ヨーロッパで食べられているカンタロープ、日本やアメリカなどで好まれるマスクメロン、南部アフリカのスパンセックとはそこが違う。どれもめちゃくちゃうまいんだけど、「本物のrockmelonはオーストラリア産だけ。だからこそ、これは（豪キャブラリー）なんだ。」 Strine Dictionary | 考えRoo
