New Roads

Kangaeroo won’t be doing much riding along the Tama River for a while.

For the next few weeks, it will be back in the homeland again.

Riding will be a bit of a challenge while there.

But also a bit exciting!

Oz is far stricter on policing road rules than Japan.

It will be interesting to see whether Kangaeroo can adapt to the differences.

Kangaeroo grew up in the Dandenong Ranges, which are apparently a cycling Mecca for Melburnians, though it wasn’t the case back in the day (at least to the author’s knowledge).

For the time being, though, it’s ta-ta to the Tama! And what a way to say bye!

Cop A Gander At These Rippers Too...

  • Too Good To Be Truthful

So, I pledged to myself to revert this blog to it’s original role of telling funny and interesting tales related to either Japan or Australia, I wasn’t totally honest to myself, which is always the case when convenient to do so. Not that it’s a despicable or harmful lie, but the morning was too wonderful to let go undocumented this morning, so it’s another set of cycling sunrises. My colleague similarly subjected to an unjustifiably huge pay cut announced his imminent departure yesterday with no word of a replacement, which I am assuming means a drastic increase in workload. In better news, a friend has an unused bike frame he…

  • Climbing

Kangaeroo loves cycling. He cycles a lot. And I mean a lot. The line between a moderately good rider and a strong rider can largely be drawn at climbing; specifically, how fast a cyclist can make it up the hills. The best cyclists are all good hill climbers. The key to strong climbing is having a good power to weight ratio, which basically means weighing little but still having lots of power. Look at most pro cyclists and they all look like skeletons with disproportionately huge legs. Unfortunately, the only thing disproportionally huge about Kanageroo is his belly. He has practised hard at becoming a better climber, but the results…

Up And Away Over The Clouds On A Brompton

My Brompton folding bike has proved to be more of a handful than I’d hoped with its unique parts costing a lot to maintain, but it is also lifting me to new heights in cycling, literally this month as I rode the Norikura skyline. The Norikura Kogen skyline is one of the highest elevation roads in Japan and I got a shock riding down a mountain for the first time, especially as I was carrying a heavy load. I rode my brakes nearly the entire descent of roughly 15 km, which started in pleasant sunshine, but ended in a mist. I had no idea how to descend properly, and when…

  • Sizzling Hot Hits The Spot…Sometimes

Tokyo has been blistering hot for weeks now, with temperatures topping 35 degrees nearly every day now since at the least the start of July. For someone who despises the cold as I do, the heat is welcome, regardless of its energy draining effects. At least, that is for some of the time. Steamy humidity throughout the night has made sleeping onerous, and I’m not helped by Mrs. Kangaeroo being extraordinarily sensitive to the cold, which rules out my preferred remedy of having a fan going beside the bed. Fortunately, cycling helps acclimate to the heat, I have found. My experience has been that riding in all weather conditions essentially…

  • Big Red Bike Tour Stage 9: The Knights In White Lycra

Thanks to my annual leave, and a message from a fine man committed to giving back to society, I got to spend Stage 9 of the Big Red Bike Tour visiting a video night to showcase the 500-km charity ride the Knights in White Lycra made in June. The Knights in White Lycra (KIWL) were formed in 2013 and are a group of volunteers that devote themselves to giving back to society and getting fit in the process. They donate the proceeds of heir activities to Mirai no Mori, an NPO devoted to underprivileged children. KIWL conducts a number of fund-raising events, but those that most attract my attention are…
