Tokyo has been blistering hot for weeks now, with temperatures topping 35 degrees nearly every day now since at the least the start of July. For someone who despises the cold as I do, the heat is welcome, regardless of its energy draining effects. At least, that is for some of the time.
Steamy humidity throughout the night has made sleeping onerous, and I’m not helped by Mrs. Kangaeroo being extraordinarily sensitive to the cold, which rules out my preferred remedy of having a fan going beside the bed.
Fortunately, cycling helps acclimate to the heat, I have found. My experience has been that riding in all weather conditions essentially eliminates climate from being a factor in how I feel.
I’m getting back on the bike for regular daily rides now for the first time in maybe three years and I have realized once again that I don’t notice the extreme heat when riding, despite being grossly overweight, even though fatties like me tend to struggle in the summer.
It’s a bit of a different story off the bike, but the warmth, dry air and sunny skies have been enjoyable and cycling in them a liberating experience.

- Flake News! Tokyo, or at least the hillier Tama part of it, got dumped by a heavy snowfall on Friday, turning the place white. Kangaeroo Corner’s trees, never keen on the cold, struggled with the heavy snow clogging their branches. It did look good, to be fair dinkum. But it was another...
- Purple Heys! Kangaeroo Corner is welcoming the slow onset of spring with a little shock of violet offering greetings and warmth in more ways than one. - Everlastings Love! Everlasting daisies have become the first plants I’ve potted after starting to grow them from seed. I planted the seeds in humidity pods on February 19. They germinated in a flash, with buds clearly visible within a week. They were starting to grow too big for the pods, so I...
- There And Back Again: Oz 2022 Kangaeroo made it back to Oz for a while in 2022. The circumstances behind the trip weren’t the greatest. But the time spent Down Under was fruitful and poignant. - Arrows of Outrageous Fortune Mrs. Kangaeroo invited me out on a date today, which turned out to be an absolute ripper (how could any event with Mrs. Kangaeroo not be?), but involved horses, of course! - Bird Bother Has Us Flying…By The Seat Of Our Pants Our dearest–in terms of both emotion and bloody expense–little mate gave us a bit of a shock the past few days as Dino, our rosy faced lovebird, appeared to be petering (ptering?) toward the brink only to slowly move toward recovery. I’m guilty as I’ve been sharing meals (and snacks)...
- Garden Shower Puts the Win Into Winter It’s raining today, and while that would normally be grounds for disappointment, considering the dryness of the year, the precipitation is actually welcome. Nowhere is that more obvious than in Kangaeroo Corner. The sprinkle made the garden sparkle. The yard always looks nicer after good rainfall, which makes the greenery...
- Rav-AGE! Getting old is not much fun, nor, as the late, great thespian Bette Davis once famously said, it’s not for sissies. But I’ve becoming increasingly conscious of age over the past few weeks. My eyesight is going: quickly and rapidly. I’m seeing less in the dark and rain, vision is...
- ‘Umble…That’s What You’ve Gotta Be Humility is a trait I desperately seek, but, like Uriah Heep in Charles Dickens‘ masterpiece, David Copperfield, who constantly espoused the need to be humble, I implore myself to be modest, but the only area in which I have consistently done so is my track record in life. For those...
- Spring Is Here, But Not In My Step Arthritis is taking over my body, seemingly joint by joint, with my left foot in particular so painful it’s becoming a struggle to walk, even as the spring makes the prospect of doing so ever more appealing. - Mist-ical Nature conjured up a mystical morning as the warm air over the icy Tama River created a fabulous world of mist. It’s common around this time of year to have mist over the river. - Rejoining the Fold I’m really blessed to be able to ride a Brompton folding bike. I think…. ….Anyway, my Brommie is the reason I got hooked on cycling. I fist learned about Brompton bikes through a work mate who had one. I was already riding extensively at the time on a Dahon folding...
- Squeezing In More Than I Thought When I started writing the title, my intention was to talk about how I am getting more done day-to-day than I expected, but I realized it was also just as apt as my daily battle with clothes. I’ve struggled all my life in a battle against weight, but have been...
- Keeping Things In Focus When Everything Is Blurred Things have rattled me a little over the past week or so, with seeming stability I thought I had built up shaken and stirred but (to continue the analogy) I’m thankful for the strong bonds I have to keep my mind in place. - Of Banksia and Birdies It’s the most glorious day of the year so far in terms of weather and I am sitting in my back office, stuffing myself full of chocolate and lollies and preoccupied with bloody banksia and birds. - Waking Up Early Helps Dreams Come True I don’t want to sound like I’m virtue signaling or anything like that, but my experience has been that the more active I am in the early morning, the greater the likelihood that I’ll gee myself up into being a decent person and go about making the most of the...
- Sticky And Sweaty Before The Swelter It’s the rainy season in Tokyo now, but the forecast is for a wet weekend followed by a couple of weeks of sweltering temperatures. - Beware The Creatures Of The Night Much to the chagrin or Mrs. Kangaeroo, our garden is filled with all sorts of weird and wonderful Australian creatures, and they’re designed to look nice nocturnally. - Crapper Crisis We’re facing possibly one of the greatest calamities imaginable in a modern society outside of a natural disaster: our washlet is broken! - Break Affords A Break From Brakes Arthritis has crept through my hands over the past few years, crippling my fingers and robbing me of any power. The Wallabies lost badly to England in a quarter final, mostly because they were not...
- Waltzing Matildas In The Land Of The Rising Sun Waltzing Matilda is probably Australia’s most famous song and it’s certainly a tune that remains powerfully iconic of Down Under, but has not had the impact in Japan of other Aussie tunes, like say, Click Go the Shears. - A Second Bite of Biwaichi Fatigue, muscle soreness and endurance were going to be the order of the day on the Kangaeroo crew’s second leg of Biwaichi, the circumnavigation of Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. - Bonzer Bonsai! - Open Up Your Eyes, An Everlasting Bud! Kangaeroo’s Aussie seed experiment is moving forward, and today resulted in its first buds. Seedling growth came from an everlasting, a pink, yellow and white flower native to Western Australia. I potted everlasting seeds last weekend in humidity pods. They’ve been growing under lights daily ever since, except for Tuesday...
- Almost Looks Like We’ll Be Flying High Our little dinosaur has been crook for the past couple of months. Dino is now...
- Where’s the Whist Amid the Wisteria? Being greeted by the sublimely serene sight of fully blooming wisteria in the outer suburban wonderland of Yakushiike Park only to have the calmness crushed by the piercing squeal of a little prick abusing and haranguing me for riding a bicycle in the park wasn’t really what I had been...
- No Beg Pardon In Our Garden Our garden, Kangaeroo Corner (even though it’s not a corner), is unabashedly at its best in the spring, though it also thrives in places during the other seasons. Flowers are blooming now, bringing immense delight. Flowers I grew from seeds–hardenbergia and kangaroo paw now, a dwarf wattle that briefly flourished...
- Pop Goes The Blister And A Cracker Jaca I’m not quite out of action, but not far from it, thanks to popping a tiny blister on my finger over a week ago now. - Ouch! Taking a Tamagawa Tumble 「Ouch!」 Kangaeroo took a Tama River tumble today and it was entirely his fault. Original, Chewy Choc Fudge, Chewy Caramel, Mocha Coffee, Double Coat, Chilli Choc Fling, Tia Maria, Classic Dark, Creamy Truffle Temptation, Black Forest Fantasy, Hazelnut Praline, Love Potion, Red Velvet, Butterscotch and Cream, Choc Orange, Strawberries and Cream, White, Gluten Free, JatzとDark...
- Whetted for Wet Rain is falling pretty steadily and though the rainy season in Japan gets me down, on the verge of its start, the precipitation has whetted the garden’s appetite for the wet; at least for the onset of the season, which could go on for months, or not happen at all,...

Warilla gold medallist cops car fine...

Marunouchi is the literal heart of Tokyo, being the closest district to the Imperial Palace, which is the reason why the city is Japan’s capital. It’s a delight rolling up to the office and...
