Uneventful

Today’s ride was bland and mundane, which made it pretty much ideal, but the sunrise did throw some color and spectacular skies in there to make for some amazing scenes.

The mornings are already darker and I need to wait until about 4:30 a.m. to be assured of a ride in complete light where it had been light at 4 a.m. less than a month ago.

It always seems the light disappears faster than the darkness.

But I am glad to have the light in place anyway.

Better light also allows for ease of riding.

And I got to look on in awe yesterday when a bloke ripped up the Tama River in full aero kit with a teardrop helmet and skinsuit, and riding a time trial bike with a carbon disc wheel. He sure left me for dead, even though I was averaging a not unimpressive pace of over 30 km/h. Maybe it was better left unseen? Nah….it was impressive to watch, even if beyond my abilities.

Cop A Gander At These Rippers Too...

  • Open Up Your Eyes, An Everlasting Bud!

Kangaeroo’s Aussie seed experiment is moving forward, and today resulted in its first buds. Seedling growth came from an everlasting, a pink, yellow and white flower native to Western Australia. I potted everlasting seeds last weekend in humidity pods. They’ve been growing under lights daily ever since, except for Tuesday night when the power plug short-circuited. I’ve checked the pods daily to see how they are developing, so was delighted to see the little leaves sprout. Might have some stronger seedlings in the works. Once they have grown big enough, I will transplant them into pots and move them into the hothouse outside. Hopefully, I’ll be able to plant some…

  • Another One Bites the Dust…

It’s no longer possible for me to trust my own mind because I know how utterly unreliable it is, but I got greater affirmation of why I’m so uneasy in my workplace when I learned last night that we have lost yet another very decent person from our working team. My boss is toxic. So am I, though. I’m not a positive, constructive workplace presence; at least in terms of what my employer would like. Nobody can work with my boss. She has chewed up and spat out everyone she works with, mainly through being excessively demanding and relentlessly uncompromising. I’m moaning, but not merely whining. I’ve in the 10th…

  • Paws Before Thinking

Times are tough and Mrs. Kangaeroo implored me to tighten my belt to cope with rising prices and crippling wage cuts, but I don’t think she was too impressed by my belt tightening efforts involving gargantuan eating practices and getting fatter. It’s been a gloomy year in many ways so far, including literally, which has had an effect on the plants I’ve been growing in Kangaeroo Corner, and which are providing incalculable amounts of joy. As I’ve mentioned before, I got to realize how little sunlight we’ve received in western Tokyo this year because of the performance of our solar-powered Fountain of Strewth. And this taught me of the importance…

  • Inching Back Into Reality, One Step At A Time

This week was all about crawling back into real life. I had spent the past couple of months pretty much shut away from the world and immobilized due to a broken leg. I got to return the crutches I had used, swapped them for a cane and now decided I am going to try and walk as much unaided as I possibly can. My doctor and physiotherapist advised me not to cycle, but they did so on the eve of the long year-end, new year holiday when dealing with any accident or incident is tough for medical professionals. I discovered cycling not only offered greater mobility, it was easier on…

  • Trying To Kid Myself On Children’s Day

Blessed with glorious weather and little wind, it was almost appropriate I spent the first part of Children’s Day trying to kid myself that I am something of a decent cyclist. I did manage to build up an almost acceptable pace considering the countless number of traffic lights I had to deal with on a quick trip in and out of central Tokyo. Blessed with a day off as part of the Golden Week series of holidays, I headed into town to attend a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous near Tokyo Tower. The group was filled with sanctimonious, pious souls, so I left feeling like I could speak in tongues, but…
