Doggedly Marching On

Every bone in my body is aching, but I am not giving up and am adamantly moving ahead with our current schedule, but boy am I feeling it. Part of the problem might be that I have too much free time on my hands, which allows me to realize how sore I feel. It’s hard to keep busy as I’m trying to look after the dog, the dinosaur and the domicile, all at the same time.

My body is feeling the pinch because Uyu and I have been walking about 15 km/day in the sapping heat, spreading the walks over the morning and late afternoon. It has been a magical experience that I have thoroughly enjoyed. Getting to know some of the delightful little laneways in the neighborhood has been an added pleasure.

But it has left me drained of energy, which has been compounded by the border collie dragging her toys up to me and dumping them at my feet in a gesture demanding further play at a time when I’m trying to recuperate.

Cameras have been the casualty of these exertions, too. I’ve sweated so much on our walks that it has seeped into TWO DSLR cameras and rendered them unworkable. That’s four cameras busted for the year, with either perspiration or water the major culprits. Considering we’ve taken a huge hit financially in 2024, the timing wasn’t really opportune.

Uyu gets to go to the beautician today. I won’t have a camera to properly capture her transformation, but it will still be good for her.

And then, that’s it. She gets picked up tomorrow and we don’t see her again for a while.

Her time with us has been bliss, despite the sore bodies, interrupted plans and stinky, dirty touches of canine cuteness.

Dino has been patience personified, aided by caring for an egg.

Next week will be some serious study and cycling for me, though. And a return to a schedule.

Up And Away Over The Clouds On A Brompton

My Brompton folding bike has proved to be more of a handful than I’d hoped with its unique parts costing a lot to maintain, but it is also lifting me to new heights in cycling, literally this month as I rode the Norikura skyline. The Norikura Kogen skyline is one of the highest elevation roads in Japan and I got a shock riding down a mountain for the first time, especially as I was carrying a heavy load. I rode my brakes nearly the entire descent of roughly 15 km, which started in pleasant sunshine, but ended in a mist. I had no idea how to descend properly, and when…

  • Dino’s Might Is Dynamite!

By all rights, we should have lost Dino months ago, but our rosy faced lovebird is a fierce fighter, and combined with the dedication and devotion of Mrs. Kangaeroo, she is in bright spirits and doing well. Dino still can’t poop, which means that each day is potentially her last. X-rays and CAT scans failed to determine what was blocking her insides. Vets have not suggested operating. Whatever medicine she is taking to help her is not effective, though her steadfast refusal to take the treatment have done nothing to help. It seemed a couple of weeks ago that she may be on the path back to a complete recovery,…

The Times, They Are A Changed

Japan will finally re-open its doors to unrestricted travelers in October 2022, over 2 1/2 years since imposing strict entry requirements (especially on foreigners) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the yen at its weakest against most major currencies since the early 1990s (and effectively even weaker still in real terms as the yen of the early 1990s carried far greater purchasing power than the yen of the 2020s), tourists are predicted to flock back into Japan. Japan is one of the world’s great tourist destinations and it is Kangaeroo’s belief that the hospitality of many Japanese people show toward tourists make it this way. Japan has an extremely well-deserved…

    豪キャブラリー:Fair suck of the sav(eloy)

    Fair suck of the savは典型的なオージー英語表現だ。

Riding Miles Into Town For An Exxy Esky

Never much of a sleeper, I got a lucky break during a bout of insomnia when I found an online marketplace offering an esky giveaway. Luckily, the owner was connected, and we arranged a pick-up earlier this morning. Always an early riser, it wasn’t tough to get up, but I am now paying the price for the midnight exchange as I had to do a 60-km roundtrip before I started work. In that regard, the free symbol of Australia has turned out to be a bit exxy as I feel bloody tired.
