How Doodling On A Voting Form Led To A Set Of Aussie Legal Cockups Still Left Hanging

Others begin with a beer, a ute or a bloke doing something spectacularly silly. Jared Hyams’ began with a signature box.
Way back in about 2010, the Melbourne man was completing paperwork to change his address with the Australian Electoral Commission. He decided to find out whether anybody actually looked at the signature. Instead of writing his name, he drew a caricature of a penis. He expected the joke to pass unnoticed. It did not. The AEC rejected the application. Hyams appealed, but the appeal was dismissed as frivolous and vexatious. The AEC eventually processed the address change without the signature.

Hyams could have simply gone back to signing his name. He didn’t. The rejection made him wonder why a person’s signature had to look like a name at all. That question turned a joke into a years-long bureaucratic and legal saga. Hyams began using the doodle on other official documents. Different government bodies responded in different ways.
VicRoads initially rejected it as an offensive diagram that could be copied and create uncertainty or confusion. Hyams challenged the decision in court twice, but both cases were dismissed.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade rejected a passport application bearing the signature. Officials warned that an image of a sexual nature on official paperwork could constitute sexual harassment of government staff.
The Victorian Department of Justice also rejected a Working with Children Check application using the signature.

Yet the doodle was hardly universally rejected.
By 2016, Hyams had managed to get it onto Victorian driver’s licences, a proof-of-age card and various other documents. He had also used it with a bank, library and student identification cards. It even appeared above the Victorian government crest on his proof-of-age card. The inconsistency fascinated him.
“What a signature is comes down to the function, not the actual form,” he argued.

That was the serious point buried underneath the joke. A signature does not necessarily have to be a legible version of somebody’s name. People routinely sign documents with marks that bear little resemblance to their names. Hyams simply chose a particularly memorable mark.
The dispute had an unexpected effect on his career. The battles with government agencies sparked an interest in law, and Hyams enrolled in a law degree at Victoria University. In 2016, he was due to complete the course. The signature even caused trouble inside the university. A tutor reportedly refused to mark an assessment because Hyams had used the doodle on a plagiarism declaration, while exam supervisors sometimes questioned whether the signature on his documents was genuine.

Hyams admitted that, in retrospect, he might have chosen a different symbol. But he wasn’t prepared to abandon it merely because bureaucrats disliked it. In 2016, the story was still unresolved. Hyams described the whole episode as an “interesting journey” and said that everything was still, er, “left hanging.”
And then he largely disappeared from the news. Until the trail starts again. Australian Business Register records show that Jared Gregory Hyams’ sole-trader ABN is still active. The record places the business in Queensland and lists a business called Custom Event Entertainment Company, registered from 2018. A 2024 Australian Catholic University graduation programme also lists a Jared Gregory Hyams among the graduates. The document does not, by itself, establish what qualification he received.
More recent evidence gives a clearer picture of his working life. A current Brisbane-area entertainment listing identifies a Jared Hyams as a DJ, guitarist and singer who also works as an MC, karaoke performer and mobile entertainer. The profile says he performs at weddings, birthdays, funerals, school events and other functions.
And this is not merely an old profile sitting untouched on the internet. The listing contains customer reviews for events in 2025 and 2026, including a June 2026 birthday party.
So, sixteen years after a joke on an electoral form, Jared Hyams appears to have built a life rather different from the one imagined by the people who first encountered his signature. The law degree became part of the story. The signature became famous. And the man behind it eventually moved north and took up entertaining people for a living.
There is no reliable recent evidence I could find showing whether he still uses the famous doodle as his signature. That detail remains, appropriately, hanging. A request for confirmation went unanswered. But there is something wonderfully Australian about the whole saga.

A bloke wondered whether anyone actually checked the signature box. Someone did. They objected. He asked why. And instead of letting the matter go, he spent years finding out. Then he studied law. And eventually, apparently, he went into show business.
Not bad for a doodle.
