May It Be That Way

May is Kangaeroo.com’s favorite time of the year.

Normally, dry, warm and sunny, flowers bloom and the month is a visual and sensual delight.

This year has been unseasonably sodden, but that’s good practice for the upcoming rainy season that will begin in early June.

Normally, May is a great time for relaxing and cycling, but this year has also been a bit different.

Kangaeroo is on the move and has spent most of the month getting ready for the shift.

In that regard, the lousy weather has been a bit of a godsend, limiting the temptation to get on a bike and get away from it all.

It might be a while before the next entry, too, but some of the visual highlights of the month so far, most of them from cycling, can be found here.

Early on in the month, concentration was on riding through the mountains, enjoying the warmer weather. Now, moving into the middle of the month, focus has shifted on work and moving to the new pouch.

How Did A 19th Century Kangaroo Spark Japan-Australia Ties That Now Seem A Perfect Match?

Long before Australia became one of Japan’s closest partners, Japanese manufacturers had been using kangaroos to promote their products. The earliest documented reference to the commercial use of a kangaroo in Japan came from 1884, when a misemono traveling curiosity show advertised that it would feature a fukuro nezumi, literally a pouch mouse, at the Tenmangu Shrine grounds in Osaka. A Kangaroo on a Matchbox Japan first enacted a trademark registration system in June 1885, and Kobe-based match manufacturer Seisuisha registered its first trademark on Oct. 11 of that year. It was a matchbox featuring a lion. The lion was part of a series…

  • Tripping on the Tama River

Kangaeroo cycles pretty much daily. Due to a number of time constraints, nearly all the rides are along or near the Tama River. This river is one of the main waterways in Tokyo and has been supplying the city with water for centuries. River-side cycling is on bike tracks and really isn’t demanding (except for the requirement to be constantly wary of pedestrians). But it’s still great fun. Being able to wake up, get on the bike and shake off the cobwebs and let life rip is a blessing for this old man. And Kangaeroo is even luckier by being able to ride the absolutely gorgeous La Cangura, who heads…

  • Pavilion Pulled Down, Packed Up And Repurposed

The Australia Pavilion from the recently completed Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan is simply going to be dismantled, and its parts repurposed for other projects: a stark contrast to the fate of previous pavilions from earlier world’s fairs held in Japan. Last time Osaka held the fair in 1970, the Australia Pavilion had been one of the stars of the show, dazzling visitors with its architecture inspired by Hokusai‘s Great Wave Off Kanagawa in homage to the hosts. It made such a lasting impact that instead of ripping it down and forgetting about it, Aussie aficionados in Japan had the pavilion relocated to Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture. Though at first…

Big Red Bike Tour Stage 5: Beating Around The Bush

Considering the Big Red is made to go pretty much anywhere, I shouldn’t have been beating around the bush about going off road. But I have: until today, when we hit the dirt. I can’t go far from home as I need to look after Dino the rosy faced lovebird. But that was fine as my regular route along the Tama River also has many off-road tracks. I can’t say the idea of rough riding is enticing, but I figured I’d give it a try today. I almost immediately regretted it, though, as just minutes into hitting the dirt track, I looked down to my computer device only to discover…

The Kit Is It! (Kangaeroo Maillot Rouge: Where The Bunny Means Money)

Kangaeroo has had cycling kit merchandise for almost a decade, albeit with only a single customer. Cycling is an expensive hobby with the initial outlay on a bike combined with constant spending for maintenance and the drain of treating the almost terminal affliction of upgraditis. Never making a hefty wage and plagued with a dad bod from the age of 6 onward, I’ve never been keen on forking out the huge sums that brand-name manufacturers demand (and get) for their Lycra lineups. Necessity being the mother of invention, I soon found out that I could get customized cycling wear not only at a fraction of the price the real makers…
