MAMILシーズンがやってくる！

自然環境にいるMAMIL
　約7年目の2011年に、カデル・エヴァンス氏が世界で最も有名な自転車レースであるツール・ド・フランスで初めてオーストラリア人として総合優勝者となったことを機にオーストラリアでMAMIL族が大幅に増えた。
　MAMILはMiddle Aged Men in Lycraの頭字語であり、全身にスパンデックスを着る中年おっさんという意味だ。
　今、オーストラリアをはじめ世界中に慢性している。
　エヴァンス氏が優勝した時は34歳で、第二次世界大戦後の最長年齢優勝者であり、準おっさんとも言えるかもしれないので、多くのオーストラリア人おっさんも自分が自転車なら行けるんじゃないかと思ってMAMILブーム現象の一助となったじゃないかな？
　MAMILの特徴がメタボ体系でむちむちに高級レースチームのユニフォームを着て、超高い自転車を持つがゆっくりと走る。
オーストラリアのMAMIL群れ
　中年の危機の一種の現れなどで小ばかにされることが多いが、心理学者などが多くの中年男性がMAMILになったことによって運動ができ、他人と社会的に接するので極めて肯定的な現象として見ている。
　そこで、オーストラリア人の映画監督が世界中のMAMILについてドキュメンタリ映画を製作し、今米国で絶賛上映中。その中に登場するMAMIL一人がうつ病の真っ暗中でのサイクリングが人とつながせて、運動でエンドルフィンを分泌したので間違いなく自分の命を救ったという。
　MAMILの他、英語圏のサイクリング・スラングや専門用語が豊富であり、面白いかもしれない。奥が深い世界。言われてみれば、日本語のサイクリング・スラングもたくさんあり、日本の自転車関連世界も興味深いと言える。それがまた今度にしよう。
　とりあえず、冬の終わりが見え始まって、春が来るとMAMILが続々と近所に表れてくるだろう。見苦しいところではあるが、肉体的にも精神的にも健康的であることを考えて寛容的に見てみよう。

    A weeklong festival of cycling drew to a close with series of unexpected bonuses: forecast rain failed to eventuate; an area usually only viewed while frenetically racing along on the jalopy turned out to be filled with delights; and Kangaeroo came to the realization that 100 kilometers is not an impossible distance to cover every day provided time and speed are not needed to be accounted for.     Boxing Dayって殴りあうカンガルーと関係ないの？

    　ボクシング・デーは１２月２６日にあり、クリスマスの翌日であり、オーストラリアをはじめ、イギリスも北欧数カ国では祝日となっているが、日本でもアメリカでもほとんど知られていない。 　ボクシング・デーがある国々の中でも「何でボクシングだろう？」と聞かれる。 　スポーツのボクシングかなと思えば、そうでもなく、実際にスポーツでも殴り合いでも全く関係ない。オーストラリアの象徴一つであるボクシング・カンガルー、残念。（ちなみに、ボクシングが実際にカンガルーにとって非常に残酷な行為であり、オーストラリア国内では今禁止されている。） 　実は、このボクシングの由来がボックス（箱）にある。 　元々クリスマスの翌日で、教会が貧しい人たちのために寄付を募ったクリスマスプレゼントのボックスを開ける日であったことから”Boxing Day”と呼ばれるそうだ。 　オーストラリアでは、真夏のボクシング・デーが商業的でもスポーツ的でもお祭りの日のようだ。 　書くとしては「ボクシング・デー・セール」でバーげーン・セールが盛り上がり、一年のうちの一日売り上げが最も多い日だ。 　そして、ネット上で「Cyberボクシング・デー・セール」も行い、消費税課税が免除される海外小売に抵抗するためオーストラリア国内小売業が開催するイベントだ。 　また、スポーツがすごい。夏季国民的なスポーツであるクリケットの最も重要な一日と言えているボクシング・デー・テスト・マッチが毎年メルボルンで（5日間の試合）初日が行なう。その日、9万から10万人の観客が観賞する場合がある。 　なお、シドニーからタスマニア島州都であるホバートの間のヨット・レースが開始日となるのもボクシング・デーだ。 さらにボクシング・デーについてはこちらへ。

    Tour of Japan’s Taste of Oz

    The Tour of Japan 2018 ended Sunday in Tokyo with Spaniard Marcos Garcia of the Kinan Racing Team claiming the general classification title. Slovenian Grega Bole of Bahrain-Meridatook the Blue Jersey for the points classification. Local hero Yuzuru Suzuki took the King of the Mountain crown riding for Utsunomiya Blitzen. Australia’s own Chris Harper won the White Jersey for the tour’s best young rider while competing for Bennelong Swisswellness. Harper also finished 4th in the GC.
