How Japanese Men Shaped An Australian Language

日本人男性が育てたオーストラリアのある言語

Japanese people living in far northwestern Australia played a crucial role in development and use of an Australian language.

オーストラリア北西部で暮らしていた日本人たちが、あるオーストラリアの言語の発展に大きな役割を果たしていた――そんな事実が改めて注目されている。

Mostly male pearl divers, the Japanese people who lived in and around Broome in the late 19th to early 20 centuries influenced the Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin.

19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて、主に男性の日本人真珠潜り師たちが多く暮らしていたブルーム周辺では、「ブルーム・パーリング・ラッガー・ピジン」と呼ばれる言語が使われていた。

Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin is named for the lugger boats used in the pearling industry around Broome, which was booming at the start of the 20th century. The pidgin is Malay-based, but had a strong Japanese tinge, as well as incorporated English and various Indigenous Australian languages.

このピジン語はマレー語をベースに、英語や先住民の諸言語が混ざり合い、さらに強い“日本語の風味”が加わっていた。

The industry attracted a diverse number of ethnicities and people groups, including, Malays, Torres Strait Islanders, Koepangers, Hakka Chinese, Filipinos, Sri Lankans, and Koreans. They mixed with local Indigenous Australians, particularly the Bardi people, but also the Nyulnyul, Jabirr Jabirr, Jukun, Yawuru, and Karajarri peoples.

Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin developed as a lingua franca for the bunch of various language families interacting all at once without a common language yet needing communication to keep up the pearling industry and livelihoods.

共通語を持たなかった多様なコミュニティが一斉に交わる中で、日々の仕事と生活を成り立たせるために発達したのが、ブルーム・パーリング・ラッガー・ピジンだった。

Although Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin was Malay-based, and the English used was mostly Indigenous Australian English, Japanese also played a part.

マレー語を基盤としつつ、使われていた英語は主に先住民英語。そして日本語も重要な役割を果たした。たとえば、日本語の「刺身」から来た「チャチャミ」などの語彙に加え、日本語風の文法助詞が取り入れられていたことが特徴だ。

Japanese contributed something extra, in addition to certain Japanese phrases and cultural terms like chachimi, from Japanese sashimi. These were grammatical particles, added in an almost-Japanese fashion. This includes the copula that some might equate to the verb to-be, ya (originally da in Japanese, or perhaps using the ya of Kansai dialect). Other particles include the particle nga, which comes from the Japanese topic marker, wa.

日本語の「だ」あるいは関西弁の「や」に由来するとされるコピュラ(英語の“be”動詞に相当)「ya」、そして日本語の主題提示「は」に由来するとみられる助詞「nga」などが、その代表例とされている。

Japanese were crucial in the development of Australia’s pearling industry, which remains a lucrative business to this day.

日本人は当時の真珠産業の中心的存在で、産業自体の発展にも欠かせなかった。

By the start of the 20th century, Japanese pearlers had come to dominate the business in Broome.

20世紀初頭には、ブルームの真珠産業従事者の約9割が日本人だった。

So crucial were the Japanese, who made up about 90% of the industry’s workers, they were exempted from the 1901 White Australia Policy, a race-based program that severely restricted non-white immigration in Australia for most of the 20th century.

その重要性から、白豪主義を掲げて非白人移民を厳しく制限した1901年の白豪州主義から、日本人真珠潜り師は特別に除外されていたほどだ。

Japanese once again proved crucial in improving relations soured by World War II by nurturing the cultivated pearl industry.

第二次世界大戦で日豪関係が冷え込んだ後、両国の関係改善の架け橋となったのも日本人の存在だった。

Tokuichi Kuribayashi, who owed the Nippo Pearl Co. and had been involved in the invention of cultivated pearls with Kokichi Mikimoto in the early 1900s, was part of a joint venture with an Australian company called Pearls Pty. Ltd.

初期の養殖真珠開発に携わった栗林徳一(ニッポ真珠社)は、オーストラリア企業「パールズ社」と共同で事業を立ち上げた。

Kuri Bay, named after Kuribayashi, would become home to Australia’s first cultured pearl farm.

オーストラリア北西部の「クリ・ベイ」は栗林の名前に由来し、ここがオーストラリア初の真珠養殖場となった。

Kuribayashi is also honored with a statue and commemorative plaque in Broome, together with Hiroshi Iwaki, who had worked with Pearls Pty. Ltd.

ブルームには、栗林とともに事業を進めた岩城弘を称える像や記念碑も建てられている。

Australia’s pearling industry today includes 20 cultured pearl farms, generates annual exports of A$200 million, and employs approximately 1,000 people.

現在、オーストラリアの真珠産業は20カ所の真珠養殖場を抱え、年間約2億豪ドルの輸出を生み出し、約1,000人を雇用する産業となっている。

Broome Pearling Lugger Pidgin is no longer used with English the common tongue of the industry.

ブルーム・パーリング・ラッガー・ピジンそのものはすでに使われていなく、死語となり英語が使われている。

But the impact of the Japanese presence remains strong and honored.

しかし、真珠の街ブルームには、今もなお日本人が残した足跡と影響がしっかり刻まれている。

Have A Very Merry Mad Max Xmas!

It was with great delight that I learned overnight that Christmas in Japan in 2025 will have a tinge of Aussie about it. And my enthusiasm was in no way quelled by the fact that this merely meant a screening of Mad Max. With a message of “Merry Mad Max,” National broadcaster NHK‘s Premium Cinema channel will celebrate the festive season with a screening of the Aussie classic propelled to worldwide success on the back of becoming a hit in Japan when it was released here in 1979. Mad Max is Australia’s most successful film franchise and Japan played a huge role in it becoming that way, as we have…

Qantas sees little growth in Japanese tourists

    豪キャブラリー: Smoko

    Smokoは典型的なオージー英語であり、典型的なオーストラリア人の行動を示す言葉でもある。厳密に言えば「一服」の意味。ニュアンスも全く同じだが、、、オーストラリアは禁煙大国のため、職場での喫煙が禁じられ、実際に仕事の一休みの時タバコを吸う人はほとんどない。しかし、喫煙が主流だった頃の流れからこの言葉は今に至っても使われている。

    豪州ど真ん中にあるBig Galah

Panorama of The Big Galah supplied by Panoramic Earth View Larger Map 関連記事 An Aussie Chrissie The Strine Why Atorkin: Natchrule Strine Galah/アホ 豪キャブラリー:Galah Strine Dictionary
