Foo, Gee!

May is, for me, the most delightful time of the year in Tokyo, and I was doubly blessed this morning when greeted by the sight not only of Mount Fuji, but with snow on top.

Fujisan, that iconic symbol of Japan, is notoriously camera shy and it’s a rare day indeed to get a clear view of the mountain outside of the colder months from say, late November through to March.

When you do get to see Mount Fuji in warmer times, more often than not it is a view of the bare mountain.

But today, just a couple of weeks away from summer and at a time that is customarily warm, Mount Fuji presented itself in its most famous attire, with snow adorning its cone and appearing to be melting along its slopes.

It’s still a glorious sight to see even after 35 years of life in Japan.

Fuji is so majestic, it’s not hard to see why it has always been regarded as sacred.

And while I may now be going a bit too much into the waffling area, it was heart-warming to be greeted by such a view now, when nature normally turns its attention in different directions.

  • No Better Time To Ride In The Land Of The Rising Sun

Now’s about the best time of the year for me to cycle in Japan. Being an early riser, I hit the road just before the sun rises in the sky. The upshot is that I get to see some beautiful skies to start off most days. Today was a bonus as there were some delightfully whispy clouds, plenty of color and gradation to greet me and my bike. I stopped in a few different places to capture what I thought were increasingly beautiful scenes as I moved on. It was a bright start to something of a bright day. My finger has healed as well as it is going to….

  • Sunshine On My Shoulders Makes Me Sappy

It’s hard not to wax lyrical when greeted by a spectuclar morning where the moon is waning lyrically and the sun about to wax. The waning moon, Venus and, I think, Mars, really stood out in the pre-dawn skies as I set off on my ride this morning. I’ve long given up trying to take a decent photo of the moon because I don’t have the technical prowess to do so, but the sight was so delightul I tried anyway. (And failed!) Yet again, the late summer sunrise did not fail to, well, shine! It really is a wonderful start to a day to be greeted by such a glorious…

  • Kicking Off 2023 With Central Tokyo Loop And Super Sunshine

If nothing else, 2023 sure started far better than the awful year of 2022 did, and eventually led to a wonderful ride focused on a central Tokyo loop. Just as had happened 12 months ago, Kangaeroo headed off on the first day of the year before the dawn. Unlike 2022, when sleet and snow had been the order of the day, 2023 was bright and clear, a much more attractive prospect even if it was still equally as cold and dark as it had been the previous annum. The objective for the day was to take part in the Half-Fast Cycling club’s Yamanote Line Loop, a traditional New Year’s Day…

  • Velodramatic!

I’d love to say I’ve done something exciting on my bicycle, but I mainly thought of a snappy word that should go down in posterity as a snappy blog title. I’ve been cycling, but not nearly as much as I would like to have done, but then again, perhaps too much. We have had a really cold snap the past week or so, and getting out and about on a bike while riding into the icy winds is not the greatest fun. But I have been rewarded finely for some of the efforts, with delightful skies and some wonderful photo opportunities. And I have managed to stay safe so far.
