Treading Through The Tulips

Much as I would love to have been tiptoeing, I’m way too fat to do that, so when Mrs. Kangaeroo and I headed off to the Hamura Tulip Festival, it was stomping heavily through the gorgeous flowers.

Mrs. Kangaeroo and I had done some cycling tours together in the past, but not since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

I’d been pushing all week to go as the return trip is largely flat and a distance I thought Mrs. Kangaeroo would be able to handle despite not having cycled for many years.

But the visit seemed unlikely yesterday as our dinosaur fell ill, and I woke this morning expecting to spend the day looking after her.

So I was surprised when Mrs. Kangaeroo got into her cycling kit and urged us to take off, which we did, getting on the Brompton and Birdy, respectively, and heading up the Tama River Cycling Road.

The festival was fantastic! A number of fields in the middle of the surburbs are transformed into a patchwork of colorful tulips.

It wasn’t grossly overcrowded despite the spectacularly wonderful weather, though we did run into a Brommie friend (who I ironically first met at the same festival several years ago!) Checking the monitor of the dinosaur cage revealed that she had broken free, so we were keen to get home.

Mrs. Kangaeroo was knackered, but she did a brilliant jonb plugging away on a half-century ride, then was gifted with the presence of the bloody bird, who was fortunately still alive if not yet recovered.

  • It’s All Happening Here!

Pushed for time and all other sorts of resources, Kangaeroo was surprised to note this morning that it had been almost 10 days since the last post on the site. So much has been going on, some of it pretty crucial, that time slipped away. To borrow a turn of phrase made popular by one-time Australian cricket captain and commentator (and fellow Victorian) Bill Lawry, it’s all happening here. I guess it’s best to go forward by category. Among Kangaeroo’s interests over the past year has been the Aussie garden. A crucial part of that garden is the lawn, traditionally an integral cog in the Australian horticulturalist’s kit (but less…

    豪のクリスマス・ソング:Six White Boomers

SIX WHITE BOOMERS Early on one Christmas Day, a Joey Kanga-roo, Was far from home and lost in a great big zoo. Mummy, where’s my mummy? They’ve taken her a-way. We’ll help you find your mummy, son. Hop up on the sleigh. Up beside the bag of toys little Joey hopped, But they hadn’t gone far when Santa stopped. Unharnessed all the reindeer and Joey wondered why, Then he heard a far off booming in the sky. Six white boomers, snow white boomers, Racing Santa Claus through the blazing sun. Six white boomers, snow white boomers, On his Australian run. Pretty…

  • A Sobering Thought or Two

January 7 is a landmark date in Kangaeroo’s life. The foundation stone of his life was laid on that date. There’s no real need to go into details. Everything started from there, and the foundation is the bedrock for living to this day. Times are not great for many ordinary people anywhere nowadays. Most, probably. But on a broad scale, they are not too bad for Kangaeroo. If nothing else, Kangaeroo has health. Physical life began a long time earlier. But that alone was not sufficient. Mental and spiritual wellbeing were missing. They are largely here now….for the most part. Well, sometimes. Maybe not the mental side! But life is…

  • Brushing Up All Right

Our bottle brush has finally burst into bloom, and what a glorious show she is putting on for us! Mrs. Kangaeroo has let loose with her amazing talents again and made plenty of bouquets using the delightfully scarlet flowers, and now I’ll deliver some to Mother-in-Law Kangaeroo to mark Mother’s Day, as it is here in Japan and in many other parts of the world today. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums around the world, and heartfelt thanks to my mum, who’s still kicking on (and probably will be for eternity the way she’s going).
