    Dillは当然ピックルズの一種であるが、オージー英語では「お馬鹿さん」みたいなちょっとかわいがりながら人を貶す言い方の意味もある。 　米語の普及が広がってことなど、社会意識も変わり、dillはほぼ死語に近い存在となっているが、あまりきつくないということもあり復活という選択があり得なくもない。 　また、日本語では「バカ」とか「アホ」がきつい言い方になる場合が多いけど、英語の直訳である「silly」か「stupid」や「fool」は軽蔑用語にならないぐらい柔らかい言い方なのだ。ショックを与えるつもりでネイティブにこれらの言葉を使ってみたら全く効き目がないということを頭の中に入れておいたほうがいいかもしれない。

    ボクシングをやるビッグ・ワニ

    　一昔前オーストラリアと言えば「ワニ」と思い浮かぶ人が居るかもしれない。１９８０年代ではあの有名なオーストラリア映画「クロコダイル・ダンディー」が日本を含めて世界中に大ヒットした上に、日本ではあまりなじまなかったがアメリカを中心にワニ・ハンター故スティーブ・アーウィン氏が１９９０年代後半から２００年代の半ば頃の間一世風靡をした。なのに、オーストラリア最北部の近くに違う形のビッグ・スターワニの存在もある。それはビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルであるのだ。 　ビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルは、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つである。高さ・長さいずれも８メートルの巨大ワニは、「Big Things」らしく特定な役割がまったくないが、一応ガソリン・スタンドの近くにあり、世界遺産であるカカドゥ国立公園へ行く道の途中でもある。 ビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルはオーストラリア北部のノーザン・テリトリー州に１９８０年代に作られて、現在多くの観光客にとってほぼ他に何もないところの唯一の思い出となるかもしれない、、、 View Larger Map
