This Is Democracy Manifest! Get Your Hand Off My Succulent Sausage!

Very glad to have grown up in a society that still seems to ostensibibly respect democracy and the rule of law, I was delighted to visit the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and partake of democracy manifest in the form of a snag.

The bleak, wet day (eerily reminscent of my native Melbourne) was the backdrop to consular officials serving democracy sausages as Aussies flocked to the embassy to vote ahead of the May 3 federal election.

I’m very grateful to the Embassy staff for putting on the sausage sizzle, and got to spend a lot of time chatting with some friendly Aussie voters.

It was also a delight to see the Australian Embassy boldly displaying its solidarity with Ukraine, maintaining Australia’s outstanding record of standing by its friends.

According to the Embassy, the term democracy sausage was coined in 2010 through the Snag Votes website that listed and mapped polling stations in Brisbane that were offering sausages in bread with onions and sauce. Democracy sausage was voted the word of the year in 2016. Now, the democracy sausage has become a symbol of voting and civic duty in Australia.

It’s kind of ironic that democracy sausages originated in Brisbane, the same city where the democracy manifest arrest occurred, as it is the capital city of the state of Queensland, which was run for decades by a corrupt politician referred to in some parts as the Hillbilly Dictator and remains Australia’s stronghold of Trump-like populism.

It was my first democracy sausage, and the snags were pretty decent, with some herbs and spices.

The bread could have been a bit fresher.

Onions were also decent. Not bad for 300 yen apiece.

And all-in-all it was a great luncheon and wonderful debut for the new Big Red, named in the Australian way because she is almost entirely blue. (Just as redheads are almost invariably known as Bluey in Australia.)

Cop A Gander At These Rippers Too...

  • With 10 Thumbs, Odds Were Always For 1 Being At Least Malachite, If Not Green

I’m notoriously clumsy, making even the simplest task a monumental one, but having 10 thumbs also increased the odds of at least one of them being green, if not a little shade of malachite. Nah…just kidding….I’m still bloody unco, and trying to prove I’ve got something of a green thumb only served to verify that fact. With the weather finally warming–and brightening–I could turn more attention to the garden, and instead of letting things lie, I want to get involved and get things growing faster than nature will allow. So I set my eyes on the kangaroo paw I’d grown from seed. These plants were important to me precisely because…

Home Unit

Home unit is a distinctly Australian English term for what British English refers to as a flat and American English calls an apartment. All three terms are understood and used in Australian English, too, and unit alone is also in wide use.

The Strewth, the Whole Strewth and Nothing But the Strewth…

Strewth, work and life are bloody busy at the moment, but I can’t let that stop me from looking after things, which resulted this week in a renovation to the Fountain of Strewth. It was nothing major, but I found wooden letters on sale in the local 100 yen shop and decided they could decorate the fountain in Kanageroo Corner. Somewhat harsh weather conditions have got me worried about the garden, with a week of fairly constant rain a few weeks ago followed by largely gloomy conditions where regular rain hasn’t arrived, topped off by blistering heat and stifling humidity. Aussie plants don’t handle the humidity well, which raises my…

The Story of the Kelly Gang

• Just A Bit Longer!

The hand-wringing wait for spring blooms is slowly starting to draw to a close as more and more sections of the Kangaeroo Corner garden burst into flower. Our callistemon is literally packed with buds that are bursting into blossom in what is actually quick succession, but feels to be interminably long. The yearned-for kangaroo paw are also showing tremendous progress, as are the banksia and grevillea. Another week or two and the garden will be at its peak! Sadly, the cute little bugs that were enjoying our garden through to this morning appear to have met their demise, judging by the Japanese tit that landed on their pot with an…
