Just A Bit Longer!

The hand-wringing wait for spring blooms is slowly starting to draw to a close as more and more sections of the Kangaeroo Corner garden burst into flower.

Our callistemon is literally packed with buds that are bursting into blossom in what is actually quick succession, but feels to be interminably long.

The yearned-for kangaroo paw are also showing tremendous progress, as are the banksia and grevillea.

Another week or two and the garden will be at its peak!

Sadly, the cute little bugs that were enjoying our garden through to this morning appear to have met their demise, judging by the Japanese tit that landed on their pot with an alarming familiarity.

    Times are tough and Mrs. Kangaeroo implored me to tighten my belt to cope with rising prices and crippling wage cuts, but I don’t think she was too impressed by my belt tightening efforts involving gargantuan eating practices and getting fatter. It’s been a gloomy year in many ways so far, including literally, which has had an effect on the plants I’ve been growing in Kangaeroo Corner, and which are providing incalculable amounts of joy. As I’ve mentioned before, I got to realize how little sunlight we’ve received in western Tokyo this year because of the performance of our solar-powered Fountain of Strewth.     豪手話通訳「中指立てる」ことが悪意無し

    　オーストラリアニューサウスウェールズ州が非常事態宣言となり中心となっている山火事関連記者会見で務める豪手話（Auslan)通訳が「中指を立てる」と指摘がありネット上で課題となっているが同州ロア協会がどう表現がいつもの侮辱的な意味がないという。 　アメリカで始まった「中指を立てる」が怒っている人に対して示すジェスチャだけど、この約40年間では、オーストラリアやその他の英語圏全体をはじめ世界中に使用することになった。 　しかし、Auslanは、100年以上の歴史があり、同ジェスチャがオーストラリアで一般化される前にコミュニケーションとして手話で中指を立たせることが一切珍しくなかった。今でもAuslanでは良く使われているらしい。たとえば、Auslanでは中指を立つと「あって使える」か「バカンス」や「怠ける」という意味がある。 　同協会が「中指立てる」終話をマーケティングとしても活用している。一部のPR資料には同ジェスチャの写真があり「思っている意味と違うぞ」と書かれて健常者などに終話に関する啓発などを行なっている。 　Auslanはイギリス豪手話とアイルランド豪手話で大きく影響与えられてるが、独自な言語となっている。大きな方言が二つあり、オーストラリア北部で使われいる「ノーザンAuslan」と南部使用の「サザンAuslan」。数多くの先住民言語に基づいている豪手話言語もある。 Auslan Signbank (Auslanデータベース） Auslan 辞書

    カンタス航空がオーストラリアでの日本人観光客数を減少続く見通し

    　オーストラリアで旅行する日本人の数がこれからも激減するだろう、とカンタス航空が予想していることはニューキャスル・ヘラルド紙が27日報道した。 　国立観光予想委員会によるとこの10年間オーストラリアへ旅行する日本人の人数が毎年６％ペースで減少し、これから増加してもほんの少し程度だという。 　同委員会が観光客激減の理由は、オーストラリアが観光インフラに投資していないことと日本人の価値変化が背景にあるだという。 Qantas sees little growth in Japanese tourists

    The Japan-Australia Link As A Fallen Star Became A Black Hole

    Japan has become pretty much synonymous with high quality construction, but that didn’t prove to be in what was supposed to be a star project in Melbourne but ended up being more of a black hole. The 120-meter-high Melbourne Star Ferris wheel was supposed to be a boon for tourism in Australia’s largest city, as well as a strong leap forward for Sanoyas, an Osaka-based shipbuilding company looking to expand into the amusement park business.     豪州アイコンが引退へ

    もしかして世界で最も有名なオーストラリア人エンターテーナーが現在のツアーが終了するにもって引退することを最近発表した。 　日本ではそれほど馴染みがないが少なくとも英語圏ではデイム・エドナ・エヴァレッジが舞台をやめることになった。 　メルボルン市モーニー・ポンズ在住（埼玉県春日部市の感覚かな？）自称主婦兼メガースターデイム・エドナは、広く愛され続けてイギリス皇室をはじめ世界中に1956年のデビュー以来の50年以上に渡っててファンを集まった。 　現在、オーストラリアで自身の舞台ツアーが行っているが、終わったら（まだ終わりの日付が未定）二度と舞台に上がらないという。 　ド派手で自慢話が特徴だけど、ユーモア溢れているデイム・エドナは本当に存在感が偉大であり、演奏しないと多くの人が恋しくなるだろう。 　ちなみに、デイム・エドナ人気のもう一つの理由はコメディアンバリー・ハンフリーズ氏（男性）が演出している。同氏が既に78歳であるので、エドナ引退に関わった可能性もある。 デイム・エドナについてさらに詳しくはこちらへ。 Story about Dame Edna Everage’s retirement (English)
