    豪州ど真ん中にあるBig Galah

    　Big Galahはオーストラリア独特なキッチュ「Big Things」の中ちょっとだけ特別な存在がある。 　Big Galahは南オーストラリア州キンバ町というところに位置している。キンバ町はオーストラリアの東海岸と西海岸の大体間中辺りにあるので、ある意味この「Big Things」が国の本格的な中心部にある。 　Big Galahはオウム科のモモイロインコの象徴だ。この鳥がよくキンバ町に集まり、同町が１９９３年にオブジェを建てた。「Halfway Across Australia」というお土産屋のまん前にあるBig Galahは高さ８メートル、広さ2.5メートルと重さ約2.3トンであり、巨大だ。 　ちなみに、この鳥が（理由不明でありながら）重要なオージー言葉であり、galahを人に対して言うと「アホ」や「ドジ」だという意味。 Panorama of The Big Galah supplied by Panoramic Earth View Larger Map 関連記事 An Aussie Chrissie The Strine Why Atorkin: Natchrule Strine Galah/アホ 豪キャブラリー：Galah Strine Dictionary

    ハエがオーストラリアの夏を不快な思いをさせるとしたら、日本での「夏のえらい迷惑」がおそらくmozzieだろう。日本の暑くてジメジメしている夏がmozzieの繁殖などにとって最適な条件だよね。 ということは、mozzieは「蚊」のことのほかないよね。ちなみに、「かゆい」の「か」は「蚊」じゃないよね？蚊がそう思わさせてくれる。

    Japan is one of the many forgotten contributors to ANZAC Day, a day that has assumed legendary status in Australia and New Zealand. ANZAC Day commemorates the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915.     豪キャブラリー：Crikey

    Crikeyはこの十数年でアメリカを中心に典型的なオージー英語の一つとなったが、実際にその一昔前までに死語になりつつあった。復活の理由は故スティーブ・アーウィン氏にあった。 　多くの日本人にとって「スティーブ・アーウィン」が反捕鯨団体シー・シェッパードが使う船の名前かもしれないので、あまりいい印象を持てないかもしれません。 　しかし、アーウィン氏は環境保全に熱心な方政治的に動くより「地球人」の一人みたいだった。陽気で明るく多くの人々に対してワニをはじめ多くのオーストラリア動物のことを世界中に紹介した。 　アーウィン氏は、1990年後半からアメリカのテレビで「Crocodile Hunter」としてオーストラリアの大自然を紹介する番組や映画で大ヒットをし、得た資金を使って家族が古くから運営したAustralia Zooの運営などに使った。同氏が撮影中動物を見たどたんに「crikey」と叫ぶ、近く彼のうたい文句となった。アーウィン氏の人気が高まるとともにその言葉が彼自身そしてオージー英語のシンボルの一つとなった。 　残念ながら5年前撮影中エイに刺されて他界へ。しかし、彼のおかげで「crikey」が不滅となり、現在オーストラリアで最も成功しているオンライン・ニュースサイト名にもなっている。

    Kangaroo Cooking…Roo Meat: It’s Tasty if Ya Cook It!

    Japanese have been legally eating kangaroo for longer than most Australians. Kangaroo meat was imported to Japan and being served in Tokyo restaurants from 1988, five years before meat from the national symbol was legalized for consumption by Australians in all states other than South Australia, where kangaroo could be eaten legally from 1980. (Indigenous Australians had continued eating kangaroo, a traditional food, regardless of the ban.) Despite the head start, kangaroo meat never really kicked on in Japan, despite its reputation for being a healthy, high-protein, low-fat alternative to beef or pork.     ちょっとだけ出かける場合は、オージー英語ではnick outという表現が使える。こっそりと動く感じもある。 　由来は小さく刻むのnickから来て「小さく出かける」という感覚で思ったら分かりやすいかもしれない。（しかし、刻むのが物ではなく言葉だ。）ちなみに、このnickもnicknameのnickでもある（小さい名前という意味）。
