Woozy Weather Threatens To Turn Paw Show Into Poor Performance

Our kangaroo paw are starting to bloom, but they’re coming into their own just as the rainy season starts, hinting that we might not get a grand show.

Kangaroo paw are Western Australian plants, so like bright, dry and sunny conditions.

We have had a cool, dark and wet spring and early summer.

This time last year, our kangaroo paw were resplendant. They’re only just making their way now.

The flowers don’t like humidity, and the Tokyo summer is known for its steamy conditions, which is about as bad as it gets for kangaoo paw. We’ll just have to wait and hope for the best.

In the meantime, we’re getting to enjoy the delightful snow in the summer and grevillea.

Bar None?

例えば、 “I won’t have a bar of it.” I wouldn’t have a bar of it.

  • Big Brother Is Watching You

Summer is sweltering again, turning the Kangaeroo Corner into a dustbowl, but this year is a little different because my every move is being watched by the untiring Uyu. We’ve been walking incessantly despite the heat, and the beautiful border collie had me worried because she looked exhausted and overheated when we returned home last night. Each day of her stay has exceeded 34 degrees Celsisus, with 80 percent-plus humidity, a searing sun and scorched asphalt. We’ve still walked at least 10 kilometers every day. I’m bushed. But loving it. Walking through the area has also taught me how beautiful the region is. And having a dog provides plenty of…

Happy As Larry

Strine doesn’t really give itself over to hyperbole, which perhaps explains how a term can arise like “happy as Larry.” This Australian English saying simply means to be overjoyed, happy or completely satisfied. Though there are plenty of unfounded theories, precisely who or what the Larry referred to is a complete mystery.

Big Red Bike Tour Stage 4: Costcollosal

Following the previous day’s exertions, Stage 4 of the Big Red Bike Tour was closer to a rest day, albeit with little breathing space as I headed off to spend a collosal amount of money at the nearby Costco. Inflation is hitting Japan after more than three decades of price stability and its effects are compounded by a weaker yen in a country that imports most of its food. Therefore, our regular order from the supermarket now costs almost double what it used to (except Australian-made Four ‘N Twenty pies, which cost 1,248 yen for a six pack, which makes them considerably cheaper than what you’d pay for where they’re…

  • A Cry in the Dark

Riding in the morning now is cold, dark and gloomy….kinda like the state of my mind for quite some time now. But, and I guess this is like my mentality, too, there’s also an exquisite beauty to the late autumn mornings. Mists over the Tama River are breathtaking (that could be weight and age, though!). And the gradation of the sky as the sun prepares to rise is a delight, glowing a reddish orange at the horizon and slowly darkening into a deep blue, almost black the higher it goes. The pampas grass looks like a pink blanket over the riverbanks. The Tama Toshi Monorail also gives the otherwise somewhat…
