There’s Something Coincidental About Serendipity

Serendipity has shaped my life much more than I would ever have expected. Two of the most fateful moments of my existence arose by coincidence, both of which involved bumping into someone I’d never expected to see again. These accidents led to me spending most of my life in Japan, and for now doing so clean and sober.

Anyway, I’m digressing from what I really want to talk about, which is coincidence. Over the weekend, I was at a meeting when a neighbor walked in with his wife trailing behind him. The wife looked familiar as it turned out she should….More than three decades ago, she had kindly been one of the few people from a class of dozens that I tried to give in one of the rare occasions that I tried to be a teacher. The class was a long way from where we are now, and a very obscure one. We immediately recognized and reconnected, this time as neighbors. I was moved that fate had brought this devoted person into my life once again.

Two heads are better than one

The chance meeting got me reminiscing about how much kismet has done for me. Now is the happiest time of my life, and another reason I feel so fortuitous is that I happened to come across a social media post that also proved to be life-changing.

Shutting the gate after the horse has bolted

It’s too public a forum to go into details here because people other than myself are involved. But it also inspired me to find some drawings I used as materials all those years ago. I’m really striving to live for today, but also grateful to be able to draw on decades of truly wonderful experiences.

Esky

  • Keeping Things In Focus When Everything Is Blurred

Things have rattled me a little over the past week or so, with seeming stability I thought I had built up shaken and stirred but (to continue the analogy) I’m thankful for the strong bonds I have to keep my mind in place. Dino, our little rosy faced lovebird, is continuing her battle to get better, with each day a bonus now after we thought she was gone last week. Her fight is consuming a lot of my time (and resources), but she is deserving of that. Friends and family have rallied behind us to try and bring her back to health. And I am grateful to be able to…

  • Slowly Settling Into Place

It’s been a great year. I’ve been in full-time employment since April, the longest unbroken stint of working since September 2008. Mrs. Kangaeroo pleaded with me for some stability and I feel like we are close to getting there. Our company got bought out over the summer. Our office moved from Shibaura to Aoyama. We will be run by cryptobros, but they seem like a decent bunch of fellers and our contract terms are unchanged. I finally got myself a smartphone, too. I wish I felt more secure. Recovery is going well. I am deeply involved in the Fellowship. My relationship with the gorgeous Mrs. Kangaeroo is going great guns….
