Aichi Says Ouch! Roos Key To Oral Health

Kangaroos are key to oral health in the central Japanese prefecture of Aichi.

The Aichi Dental Association uses kangaroos as its mascots, focusing on the close relationship between generations symbolized by joeys in a pouch to encourage dental care from infancy through to old age.

The ADA chose the character following a competition among students from HAL Nagoya vocational school in 2023.

Competition winner Yuma Furuta made three kangaroo characters to represent the ADA. Aishii, the jill, is named through an anagram of Aichi and shika (the Japanese word for dentist). Boomer Ken is meant to symbolize kenko, the Japanese words for oral health. Their joey, Smile, has a self-explanatory name. Furuta’s concept was to create a healthily smiling Aichi Prefecture.

He chose kangaroos because of the immediate connection connotated between generations.

Furuta also reckons the marsupial’s shape resembles the map of the prefecture, but I think he’s probably pushing it a bit in that regard.

  • Affection, Trust, Speed And Dynamism Behind Japan’s Most Famous Kangaroo Logo

Of the surprisingly numerous Japanese entities that choose to use a kangaroo for their corporate logo, Seino Holdings Co. Ltd. is probably the best known. Seino Transportation Co. Ltd., the core company of the group, operates trucks adorned with a kangaroo logo that traverse Japan as one of the country’s largest logistics companies. They make kangaroos a daily sight throughout Japan. Seino provides a variety of services around the theme of Kangaroo Deliveries, such as Kangaroo Express and Kangaroo Home Delivery. Campbelltown Forest of Wild Birds A Slice of Oz in Sleepy Saitama

Koshigaya, located some 30 kilometers from downtown Tokyo, and Campbelltown, which is situated about 50 kilometers from Sydney’s central business district, were almost made for each other, even if only serving as satellite cities for their respective countries’ largest cities. Koshigaya and Campbelltown are sister cities and it’s hard to see a better example of the custom than the relationship between the Japanese bed town and its Aussie sibling. Koshigaya is also home to a picturesque corner of Australia, complete with wallabies, emus and some lovely wild birds, including rainbow lorikeets, superb parrots, Major Mitchell’s cockatoos, tawny frogmouths and kookaburras. The Campbelltown Forest of Wild Birds in Koshigaya could arguably…

  • A Kangaroo Saves The World!

A kangaroo in a space suit saves the world in the most amazing Chinese movie, which I have just learned about. King Kong Roo is one of the heroes in Moon Man, the delightfully hilarious 2022 movie about Yue, a guy stranded on the moon with humanity apparently obliterated by an asteroid shower slamming into the planet. King Kong Roo is a kangaroo that had been left in a moon base research lab. He forms an unlikely friendship with Yue and they strive to return to the earth. The kangaroo ends up a hero, reverred around the world. The film is an adaptation of South Korean illustrator Cho Seok’s webcomic…

  • Packing a Roo in the Days of Pac-Man

Kangaroo was a mildly successful arcade video game released in 1982. Launched in the same year was the phenomenally successful Pac-Man and notorious Custer’s Revenge. Kangaroo also came out in the same year as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (video game), the flop largely blamed for the video game industry crash of 1983. Kangaroo required players to take on the role of a mother roo who dodged falling fruits and punched primates to rescue her joey, who had been stolen by the monkeys. The game started as an arcade game before Atari made versions for its 2600 and 5200 game consoles. The game was also later adapted for a children’s cartoon. Kangaroo…
