Beware The Rides Of March

By the Australian reckoning, where seasons change on the first day of the month, I am always a sucker when I get on a bike in March and suddenly expect spring conditions.

No amount of experience seems to change the way I approach this.

And it only happens in March, really, where I await the transition from winter to spring, which seems to drag on for an interminably long time.

Every year, the gap between winter and spring seems to linger longer than ever before.

Of course, each year is a relatively shorter period of life, so all things considered, it’s actually shorter.

Japanese has a saying to describe this time of year, 三寒四温, which means three days of cold, four of warmth. I’d settle for that, to be honest, but the reality until around mid-April is that we get about a week of icy cold and a couple of days of warmth.

Today, it was a day of bitter cold. (Yesterday was even worse, having been cold, wet, and dark!)

One good thing about a day like today is that it was gloriously bright and sunny. The contrast created a blanket of mist over the Tama River. It looked mystical. And it felt like I was riding my bike above the clouds. Of course, I wasn’t able to capture on camera the beauty of what I got to ride through, which is a shame, as it was so wonderful, it was a sight that deserved to be shared.

But the air was like ice. Even though I was dressed for the warmth and it was delightfully sunny, the chill ran through to my core. Showered, in a heated room and filled with a hot meal and steaming coffee even hours later, the chill still permeates me. But it was worth it.

  • Using Any Excuse Just To Post This Pic

A somewhat discomforting start to the year has continued today, but that doesn’t really matter because I’m just making up excuses to write so I can post this picture. I captured this shot near Tachikawa‘s Kotobukiya Stadium as the local residents prepare for their d dondoyaki festival to build huge bonfires made from New Year decorations and pray for good fortune for the rest of the year. These festivals are held by thousands of neighborhoods across the country, but I have also viewed them as something akin to the chilling denouement of the 1973 British horror flick, The Wicker Man. My perspective is totally incorrect, of course, but I’ve never…

  • Let There Be Light

This morning I got an entire ride in the light for the first time this year. I still had lights on my bike, but they were the flashing type that enabled me to be seen instead of the high-lumen shiners that all me to see. It was lovely to be able to see the faces of people using the Tamagawa Cycling Road at the same time. We’ve only been silhouettes to each other for an interminably long time until now. There’s a chance to smile and greet instead of furtive glances while trying to stay safe in the dark. Today was noticeably lighter because it was my first morning ride…

  • Break Affords A Break From Brakes

Arthritis has crept through my hands over the past few years, crippling my fingers and robbing me of any power. This has made braking difficult while cycling, effectively ruling out hitting mountains and group rides because I can’t be sure of being able to brake in time. But a break in a finger has provided a break from braking. All my cycling plans for the year have been put on a backburner for the time being. I had intended to get back to daily riding and going for longer rides on weekends to try and get back to the riding I was doing a few years ago. But arthritis, especially…

  • Pop Goes The Blister And A Cracker Jaca

I’m not quite out of action, but not far from it, thanks to popping a tiny blister on my finger over a week ago now. The bloody thing got infected and the infection started to spread up my arm. Pain has been excruciating, which has come as a total surprise considering how small the original blister was, and I have barely slept in a week filled with visits to the dermatologist and being pumped with increasingly large and frequent doses of painkillers and antibiotics. It finally appears as though the drugs are working and the swelling has subsided and the infection beginning to retreat. I’m not the only ailing body…
