Every February and March, Japanese professional baseball teams head south instead of north. Why? The answer isn’t simply sunshine. Behind Australia’s growing role in Japanese baseball lies a story of friendship, trust and a shared love of the game.

More Than Sunshine

When winter grips Japan, Australia is enjoying late summer.

That makes it an ideal place for pre-season training.

But sunshine alone doesn’t explain why Japanese teams keep returning.

They come because Australia offers first-class facilities, quality opposition and communities that welcome them year after year.

Building Baseball Friendships

Training camps create more than fit players.

They create friendships.

Local volunteers, junior players and baseball clubs often help host Japanese teams.

Children watch professional players train only metres away, while visiting athletes experience everyday Aussie hospitality.

Learning From Each Other

Australian baseball has long admired Japan’s discipline and technical excellence.

Japanese teams, in turn, appreciate Australia’s relaxed training environment and competitive local talent.

The exchange benefits both countries.

Knowledge travels in both directions.

A Growing Partnership

Australia is no longer simply a convenient place to train.

It has become an important partner in Japanese baseball’s international outlook.

Exhibition games, coaching exchanges and youth development programmes continue to strengthen ties between the two baseball communities.

A Win Beyond the Scoreboard

Fans usually remember the season that follows spring training.

Local communities remember something different.

They remember the conversations, the smiles, the school visits and the friendships.

Those moments last far longer than any exhibition game.

More Than Baseball

The relationship between Japanese baseball and Australia reflects the broader friendship between the two countries.

Built slowly.

Strengthened through trust.

Sustained by people who simply enjoy working together.

Perhaps that is why Australian training camps have become such a valued tradition for Japanese baseball.

Australia Wants You…Again! Another Embassy Opening

The Australian Embassy in Tokyo is advertising another position. This time, it’s looking for a Consular and Passports Officer to deliver essential services that support the wellbeing and safety of Aussie citizens abroad. Like last week’s posting for a Strategic Communications Assistant, this job would be an awesome chance for someone to contribute to building better relations between Australia and Japan. I’ve met lots of Embassy folks and they’re a very decent bunch of people blessed to have the wonderful job of serving Australia’s interests in Japan. Application details here:

  • Abe First Japanese PM To Visit Japanese-Bombed Darwin

In 1942, Japanese forces launched the only attacks on the Australian mainland, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe became the first premier to visit Darwin, the most heavily damaged city bombed by the Japanese. Apart from Darwin, Japanese forces also attacked Sydney, Broome, Katherine, Wyndham, Exmouth, Port Headland and Townsville in the early stages of World War II. Abe’s grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, was arrested for war crimes, but released without conviction. Kishi was instrumental in re-establishing a strong postwar trade relationship between Australia and Japan. Shinzo Abe arrives in Darwin for first visit by Japanese leader

  • Green Godzilla

On what was something of a strange weekend, perhaps the weirdest moment came when I got to come face-to-face with a green, as in made of plants, Godzilla. There’re plenty of Godzilla statues and effigies all over Tokyo, as I’ve reported before, and the rest of Japan, some life-sized, others tiny and plenty in-between and loving devoted to Japan’s most adored monster. In western Tokyo, where I live, the most famous example is probably the Godzilla statue outside the TOHO CO., LTD. studios near Seijogakuen-mae, which is a bit of a trip for me further out in the boonies. So, I was surprised to learn that there is actually a…
