What Does Wagyu Tell Us About Australia–Japan Cooperation?

Australia’s wagyu industry is about much more than premium beef. It is the product of decades of trust, shared knowledge and cooperation between Japanese and Aussie producers. In many ways, wagyu has become a symbol of one of the world’s most successful agricultural partnerships.

More Than an Industry

The success of Aussie wagyu cannot be measured only by export figures or restaurant menus.

Its real achievement lies in the partnership that made it possible.

Over several decades, producers in Australia and Japan built relationships based on mutual respect, patience and a willingness to learn from one another.

Sharing Knowledge

Japanese breeders spent generations refining bloodlines that produced exceptional beef.

Aussie producers brought world-class pasture management, animal husbandry and large-scale production experience.

Neither country could have achieved the same result alone.

Trust Takes Time

Successful partnerships are rarely built overnight.

The development of Australia’s wagyu industry required years of careful breeding, open communication and confidence that both countries would protect the integrity of the breed.

That trust remains one of the industry’s greatest strengths.

Beyond the Farm Gate

Today, Aussie wagyu appears on restaurant menus across the world.

For many diners, it provides their first introduction to Japanese breeding excellence and Australia’s premium beef industry.

Every meal carries a story of international cooperation.

A Friendship That Continues

As Australia and Japan celebrate 50 years of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, wagyu reminds us that the strongest international relationships are often built quietly.

Not through headlines.

But through farmers, researchers, veterinarians and families working together over many years.

An Unknown Nichigo Story

Few people ordering Australian wagyu realise they are enjoying the result of decades of cooperation between two nations.

That is what makes this an Unknown Nichigo story.

It is a partnership hidden in plain sight—one that continues to strengthen the friendship between Australia and Japan.

Let’s Barbie! Aussie-Style BBQing for the Japanese!

Australia beef is the most visibly successful Australian export to Japan, leaving considerable distance to its closest rivals, which these days are probably Tim Tams, Miranda Kerr and hordes of drunken ocker snow bunnies in country towns like Niseko and Hakuba. To be honest, Oz doesn’t really enter the consciousness of most Japanese, except for Aussie Beef, which is probably the first thing that comes to mind for many Nihonjin when asked about Oz. And this year, Meat & Livestock Australia Ltd (MLA) is going all-out to try and convert Japanese consumers to worshiping the barbie in much the same manner that many Aussies do. MLA is conducting a huge…

The Story of the Kelly Gang

A Bagful Of Businesses In This Kangaroo’s Pouch

Kangaroos K.K. operates a handful of different businesses, none of them with a direct relationship with either Australia or marsupials, but there’re are plenty of peas in this macropod. The company operates a mix of social-service, education and community businesses, including foreign-worker support and recruiting; staffing and temporary placement especially for childcare, education and welfare; security services; Japanese language education; children’s snack development and sales; childcare and child development support programs; and related event and training planning. Kangaroos doesn’t explain why it chose the name for the company, but choosing a kangaroo for a childcare, welfare or community business is common and sensible in Japan for three reasons: The pouch…

Japan’s Fans Still Go Mad For Australia’s Most Successful Film Franchise

One of the most outstanding characteristics I have found of many Japanese people in almost four decades of living here is that it is highly common for fun to be taken very seriously, indeed. One area where I have seen that trait on display comes with the franchise related to Mad Max, whose five movies dating from 1979’s Mad Max to Furiosia: A Mad Max Saga in 2024 make it the most successful Australian cinematic series in history. In fact, had it not been for avid fans in Japan, the franchise would probably not have continued past the first entry, but Mad Max has also given back to Japan, inspiring…

  • Why Has Kumi Taguchi Become One Of Australia’s Most Important Bridges To Japan?

Australian journalist Kumi Taguchi has spent decades helping Australians understand Japan—not through stereotypes, but through thoughtful storytelling and her own bicultural experience. Many Australians know Taguchi as the calm, thoughtful presenter of SBS’s Insight. Before that she fronted ABC News and Compass, becoming one of Australia’s best-known journalists. Few viewers realise her Japanese heritage has quietly shaped her career and the stories she tells. Taguchi is, for me, an incredible presence on Insight. The program encourages people to bare their souls about aspects of their lives that make them extremely vulnerable. Having the ability to coax those emotions from people takes an immeasurable…

Why Does Australia’s National Food Cost Less In Japan Than It Does At Home?

Meat pies, Australia’s national dish, are cheaper in Japan (even though they’re made in Bairnsdale) than they are in Australia. Tim Tams, too, up with Aussie Beef as a symbolic food from Down Under, sell in Tokyo for a fraction of the price that Aussie consumers pay for the bikkies. I haven’t looked up the price of Australian beef, but I’d reckon there’s a good chance Japanese consumers have a world away are getting it cheaper than their Australian counterparts. This is happening because there is a duopoly controlling Australian supermarkets, according to The Australia Institute, a public policy think tank. The Institute argues that Coles and Woolworths (Colesworth!), the…
