Angus Ogawa: The Japanese Guitarist Inspired by an Aussie Rock Legend

Angus Ogawa

Australian rock changed the life of a Japanese guitarist.

Angus Ogawa, the stage name of Hajime Ogawa, is a Japanese musician devoted to AC/DC guitar legend Angus Young. As a high-school student, he watched footage of AC/DC performing live in 1977 and was so blown away that he took up the guitar.

The experience eventually led him to form AD/CD, a Japanese AC/DC tribute band, following the band’s 2010 visit to Japan. Ogawa strives to recreate not only Young’s distinctive guitar playing but also the explosive energy of his performances.

During the week, Ogawa works in website production for a musical-instrument retailer. In his spare time, he takes to the stage as AD/CD’s lead guitarist. The band toured London in 2014, appeared at Summer Sonic in 2015 and has since performed around Japan, including at US military bases.

It’s a classic Australia–Japan cultural connection: a band born in Australia inspires a musician in Japan, who then carries that music to new audiences in his own country.

Colorful Japanese entertainer Kyary Pyamu Pyamu will play one show in Australia later this month as part of her Nanda Collection World Tour 2014. Demand to see the performer probably best known for her flamboyant 2011 viral video “Pon Pon Pon” has been enormous and her only Australian show on March 23 was shifted from Sydney’s Metro Theater to the considerably larger UNSW Roundhouse. The often infantile 21-year-old whose full stage name is Caroline Charonplop Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (her real name is Kiriko Takemura) is currently among the best-selling contemporary performers and is easily Japan’s best-known singer among 20-somethings outside of her homeland. Japan’s Fans Still Go Mad For Australia’s Most Successful Film Franchise

One of the most outstanding characteristics I have found of many Japanese people in almost four decades of living here is that it is highly common for fun to be taken very seriously, indeed. One area where I have seen that trait on display comes with the franchise related to Mad Max, whose five movies dating from 1979’s Mad Max to Furiosia: A Mad Max Saga in 2024 make it the most successful Australian cinematic series in history. In fact, had it not been for avid fans in Japan, the franchise would probably not have continued past the first entry, but Mad Max has also given back to Japan, inspiring…

Macropod Music and Getting Sentimental Over Kangaroos in Japan

Kangaroos and koalas are among the symbols Japanese pop culture has, for many and various reasons, adopted at times (the latter with particular relish), and singer Misato Watanabe‘s choice of subject topic for her 1988 hit Sentimental Kangaroo proved a marsupial masterpiece. Watanabe made her debut in 1986 with My Revolution, a huge hit that earned her a gold prize at the 28th Annual Japan Record Awards and would be the biggest-selling song of her career. Watanabe, whose heyday stemmed from the late ’80s to early ’90s, continues performing regularly today. Sentimental Kangaroo was one of the attempts she made to match My Revolution, one of Japan’s most-covered songs of…
