Japan is heading to the polls with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who can probably be called a populist, tapping into strong anti-foreigner sentiment to give her Liberal Democratic Party its traditional grip on power.     For much of my life, I was something of a political animal, tempered by social requirements, but eventually tamed and then driven into apathy by circumstance. However, given a chance this week to watch a series of brilliant documentaries about Australian politics with a Tokyo connection, I felt stirrings of an old flame.     オーストラリア総理大臣トニーアボットが豪訪問中の日本首相安倍晋三氏と晩餐会を行い、翌朝豪テレビ番組に出演し、二日酔いでからかわれることになった。 Australia’s perennially embarrassing British-born Prime Minister Tony Abbott turns up for a TV interview fairly hung over after a night on the booze with visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. アボット首相がかなり飲んだことを認めた。「責任を持った飲み方だった」というが、目がかなりやられているので、飲み方が責任を持って行ったかもしれないが全国放送で二日酔いに出演し、冗談を言うのはどうかなと思う。 If nothing else, at least the two countries seem to have decent relations. ま、両国仲良しを喜ぶべきだろう。

    豪キャブラリー： Budgie smugglers

    Budgie smugglersを直訳すると「インコを密入するもの」となるが、そう言われてもピンと来ないだろう。 　実は、男性用のパンツ型水着を示すものだけど、なぜそうなったか画像を見てみれば手っ取り早いかもしれない。ちょっと説明しにくいが、パンツ型水着をはくともっこりが目立ち、ほとんどの場合そのもっこりがインコと同じぐらいの大きさなので由来となった。 　ちなみに、budgie smugglersを履いている写真の男性がオーストラリア野党自由党党首トニーアボット氏だ。この写真により同氏のイメージがオーストラリア国内ではbudgie smugglersと深く密着し、お笑いなどのネタにもなっている。 そして、インコがオーストラリア産の鳥だから生まれたオージー英語が世界中の英語圏で使われるようになっている。
