    Boomerang Shrine And Shooting The Rapids

    Mrs. Kangaeroo and I got another wonderful experience shooting down the rapids in the delightful Saitama Prefecture town of Nagatoro, which is also home to a shrine hoping to draw people back with something of an Aussie touch. Boomerang Kaeru Shrine, just outside Nagatoro Station, is dedicated to the worship of frogs, but is actually a play on words. The Japanese for frog is kaeru (蛙), but also a homonym for returning home (帰る), hence the boomerang, which (allegedly) returns to the thrower upon being hurled. (This is a story for another day). Also got to find some Engrish that appealed to my eternal schoolboy side.

    Watch Your Words!

    Many foreigners guffaw at the frequent mangling of English that some Japanese can achieve and there’re plenty of websites and the like dedicated to highlighting these flaws, but they should note that this can go both ways. Perhaps a tad of extra time and consultation could have gone into the names of some of these products or places. Fukuppy was probably not the best name to give a character intended to promote a company called Fukushima Industries, especially as for most of the world, the company name evoked images of one of the worst nuclear reactor accidents in history.   • 野生カンガルーがメルボルン空港で捕まえれた

    豪キャブラリー： Pissed

    オーストラリアの飲酒文化が深く、近所でバーベキューを頻繁に開き、日本などに比べて娯楽施設が少ないので、暇があると酒を飲む人が少なくなくpissedとなる場合が多い。他の英語圏の国ではpissedは主に「怒る」と言う意味だが、オージー英語ではその意味の上にもっとよく使われているのは「泥酔状態」を示すとしての言葉だ。考えてみれば、泥酔状態だと怒りが共通となる場合が多い。ところで、ノンべは、pissheadとも言う。ちなみに、pissedは、不敬な言葉なので、使うに気を付けましょう。
