煙の出方が間違っているBig Smoke

　世界中喫煙者の肩身が狭くなっている中、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つは昔の喫煙時代を思い浮かばせるかもしれない。それはビクトリア州マートルフォード町にあるBig Smokeだ。
　Big Smokeは元々同町のあるタバコ工場の煙突でタバコに見えるように塗り替えて改造されたものだ。しかし、オーストラリアの禁煙運動が１９８０年代に入ってから非常に厳しくタバコ業界がだんだんやりにくくなった。そこで、数年前にBig Smokeがあった工場は経営が困難、タバコを製造しなくなった。
　しばらくの間工場が稼動していなくても煙突が大きなタバコに見えるままで続けた。これは未確認ですが、数年前同工場が粉を作るようになって煙突が塗り替えられて「Big Things」が一つなくなったらしい。
　Big Smokeの存在有無を別において、いずれにしてもちょっと変だった。Big Smokeのタバコのフィルターは、煙突の下部にあったので、煙が煙突から出てればタバコの反対側に火をつけたように見える。ま、オージーのおおらかさと言おう。
　ちなみに、全く違う意味のオージー英語Big Smokeがあり、この「Big Things」と勘違いないように気をつけてね。

    OECD最低火力発電所周辺にぴったりのBig Cigar

    　ビクトリア州東部チャーチルは、歴史50年も無い町が2005年に「ＯＥＣＤ最低火力発電所」とされたハーゼルウッド発電所のベッドタウンとして短い間でも（必要ない？）注目を浴びた。公害が心配な地域では、ぴったりな「Big Things」がある。巨大葉巻のBig Cigarだ。 　同町は故英国首相ウィンストン・チャーチル氏に名づけられて、同氏の象徴だった葉巻がBig Cigarのアイディアの生まれだ。最初、町内５ヶ所で巨大葉巻を立てる予定だったが、結局一つだけになった。 　同町は、約3年前放火によって始まった山火事が起こり、11人も死亡となり、火事が広域に渡って害を与えた。 煙の出方が間違っているBig Smoke 大きな地図で見る

    砂漠の真ん中の大きなBig Park Bench

    　鉱業で有名のニューサウスウェールズ州西部にあるブロークンヒルでは、訳不明な巨大なベンチがあり、同町の「Big Things」一つである。 　100数十件もあるオーストラリア「Big Things」のほとんどが観光及び何らかのＰＲ役割で作られたが、このBig Park Benchは違う。 　近くに住む三人の学校の先生が興味で普通の公園用のベンチをそのままの寸法を2.5倍にして作っただけだ。しかし、2002年にあった「風景と背景展示」に出展できた。 　この「Big Things」のユニークなところが作られている風景を全部ビデオに撮られて、下記の動画が出来た。

  • 野生カンガルーがメルボルン空港で捕まえれた

    　オーストラリアで野生カンガルーを見るのは決して珍しくないが、流石に空港内では異例だ！ 　10月２２日午前中、野生カンガルーがオーストラリアメルボルン市空港内の駐車場で走り回っている姿が見られた、とある人が警察に通報した。 　警官が駆けつけてところ、同航空の駐車場５階にカンガルーを見つけた。 　 カンガルーを鎮痛剤で撃たれ、鎮痛させられた。 無事だった。 　カンガルーは、健康状態を調査した上で放される、とメルボル市の広報が言う。 　ちなみに、野生カンガルーがメルボルン空港で捕まえられたのは２回目。 ８月にも同様な時間があった。 メルボルン空港野生カンガルー事件ギャラリー 　この動画が示すように、怖くて、逃げようとする野性カンガルーが本当に恐怖だ。 Roo turns airport into Hopper’s crossing

  • Ducking Enormous! 「ラバー・ダック　プロジェクト」がシドニーにやってきた

    　2009年大阪で日本が世界初の所在地となった「ラバー・ダック　プロジェクト」がいよいよオーストラリアまで展開した。 The infamous Rubber Duck Project that kicked off globally in Osaka in 2009 is finally making its mark in Australia. 　この高さ約10メートルのゴム製アヒル姿オブジェがオランダ人アーティストフロレンティン・ホフマン氏が制作した。 The 10-meter-tall rubber duck object is one of the famous items produced by renowned Dutch artist Florentijin Hofman. 　世界中に巨大キッチュなオブジェを設置することで有名となったホフマン氏が初めてこの「ラバー・ダック　プロジェクト」が2009年大阪で。以降、尾道市のほか世界各地で開催した。 Hofman is known for the gigantic kitsche items he has placed around the world, starting with the Rubber Duck Project he kicked off in Osaka four years ago before moving on to other places around the world, including Onomichi. 　シドニーで披露するのはシドニー・フェスティバルの一環として行う。 The Rubber Duck Project is in Sydney as part of the Sydney Festival. 　「ラバー・ダック　プロジェクト」が正式に開催するのは1月5日～23日の間、シドニー中心部にあるダーリング・ハーバーで披露される。 The huge duck will be in Darling Harbor in the center of the city in…

    Something strikes me about kangaroos in Japan, where companies like Seino and Nikko Kanko have made the marsupials highly visible. Kangaroos are possibly even higher profile than their native Australia, where Qantas uses the national symbol in its logo, but the macropod is a somewhat uncommon sight elsewhere in the corporate sector. I wouldn’t go so far as to say kangaroos are a ubiquitous presence in the Japanese retail or corporate sector, but it would be no exaggeration to claim they are a daily presence.
