Big Penguin

The Big Penguin, Penguin, TAS

Cheap As Chips Akiya For Aussies: One-Stop Bogan Basement Buys

Cheap Houses in Japan for Aussies Japan’s market for akiya, literally “empty homes,” continues to offer astonishing bargains — from ¥0 giveaways to charming kominka under ¥1 million. And with the yen being weaker against the Aussie dollar than it has been for decades, there’s no better time for those Down Under to get on top of the akiya trend. Market Snapshot Japan’s depopulation continues to accelerate, especially in rural prefectures. Municipalities are increasingly motivated to offload vacant homes, and several regions have expanded subsidies for renovation, relocation, or child‑raising. With the yen at an historically low level, even renovated homes are now comparatively affordable. Top Akiya Listing Sites (With…

    A Toast to Fine Electronics

Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges, “The Hills,” were the settings for two relatively obscure and unrelated TV shows in the 1970s and 1980s. “Solo One” was a spin-off of the successful “Matlock Police” with Paul Cronin reprising the role of Gary Hogan stationed in Emerald before he moved on to the far more successful part of Dave Sullivan in “The Sullivans.” Meanwhile, “Come Midnight Monday” was set in Cockatoo and featured Australia’s then-darling Sally Boyden in one of her rare post-“Young Talent Time” roles. The show ran in 1982, the year before Cockatoo was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

Japan’s Crucial Role in Turning “Mad Max” into a Global Aussie Icon

Turning the clock back 40 years, Japan played a crucial role in giving Australia a leg-up toward becoming a player in the global movie industry. In late 1977, a couple of fledgling Australian filmmakers pooled their meager funds and shot a movie starring mostly unknown young actors and actual motorcycle gang members serving as extras. Almost two years later, Mad Max opened Australian theaters and became a steady, but controversial hit. The car action movie was immediately banned in New Zealand as some of its motorcycle gang violence resembled actual events in the market most closely resembling Australia’s. Australia’s movie industry was in the middle of a growing renaissance, backed…

    Hugh Jackman

Oh, no! What a Hugh-ge spelling mistake! Tokyo in Parramatta Video: Parramatta transformed into Tokyo
