　一昔前オーストラリアと言えば「ワニ」と思い浮かぶ人が居るかもしれない。１９８０年代ではあの有名なオーストラリア映画「クロコダイル・ダンディー」が日本を含めて世界中に大ヒットした上に、日本ではあまりなじまなかったがアメリカを中心にワニ・ハンター故スティーブ・アーウィン氏が１９９０年代後半から２００年代の半ば頃の間一世風靡をした。なのに、オーストラリア最北部の近くに違う形のビッグ・スターワニの存在もある。それはビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルであるのだ。
　ビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルは、オーストラリアの「Big Things」の一つである。高さ・長さいずれも８メートルの巨大ワニは、「Big Things」らしく特定な役割がまったくないが、一応ガソリン・スタンドの近くにあり、世界遺産であるカカドゥ国立公園へ行く道の途中でもある。
ビッグ・ボクシング・クロコダイルはオーストラリア北部のノーザン・テリトリー州に１９８０年代に作られて、現在多くの観光客にとってほぼ他に何もないところの唯一の思い出となるかもしれない、、、

    Kangaroos are the choice of a company symbol for packaging-materials trading company Kawawa Co., Ltd. from Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture. Kawawa chose to use a kangaroo to symbolize their operations because it represents “the spirit of wrapping,” according to the company’s website. Although the company has nothing to do with Australia, it chose to represent itself with the country’s national symbol because its pouch is a natural metaphor for wrapping, carrying with care, and protecting what’s inside.     豪最も居住に適した都市メルボルンの楽天地がロケとしたテレビ番組

    多くの調査ではオーストラリアメルボルン市が世界で最も居住に適している都市と選べる。 メルボルン市内で最もきれいな地域の一つがダンデノング山脈である。ここでは、1970年代・1980年代にて当時豪全国で最も人気それぞれ俳優・女優が主役となってテレビ番組のロケ地となっていた。 どちらの番組にしても目玉道具が同地域内で走るSLパフィング・ビリーであった。 残念ながら、どちらの番組の視聴率が低くいずれも１シーズン限りでピリオドを打った。 Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges, “The Hills,” were the settings for two relatively obscure and unrelated TV shows in the 1970s and 1980s. “Solo One” was a spin-off of the successful “Matlock Police” with Paul Cronin reprising the role of Gary Hogan stationed in Emerald before he moved on to the far more successful part of Dave Sullivan in “The Sullivans.” Meanwhile, “Come Midnight Monday” was set in Cockatoo and featured Australia’s then-darling Sally Boyden in one of her rare post-“Young Talent Time” roles. The show ran in 1982, the year before Cockatoo was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

    日本人が知っている豪先住民語

    Modern Japanese is filled with examples of borrowed words from foreign languages, which are known as gairaigo. “G’day” is probably widely known throughout Japan as a symbol of Australian English, but there are some even more uniquely Australian words that have also made their way into Japanese. 　現代の日本語は、外国語を由来とする、いわゆる外来語が多く、オージー英語から来ている言葉もその例外ではない。日本では「グッダイ」が、オージー英語の典型的な例としてよくあげられるが、実際に日常生活の中でもオーストラリア先住民語が使われているという事実がある。
