「やばいリンガル」Battler (バトラー)

　オージー英語って、多くの言葉がオーストラリア独特な使い方があって、ほかの国で話す英語と言葉が同じでも意味がまったく違うことがたまにある。ここでは、その例を数多く紹介します。今日は、Battlerの誤解について見てみます。

Strine has some particular uses for words that aren’t always used the way they are in other English-speaking languages…and misusing these can sometimes cause trouble – or strife as it is in Strine – either while Down Under or elsewhere.     豪キャブラリー： Yahoo

    Yahooは、検索エンジン及びポータルサイトとして1990年代のインターネット普及によって世界中に有名な言葉となったが、実は昔からyahooがオージー英語でよく使われている言葉であり、「ふざける」という意味なのだ。 　ちなみに、1980年代後半、オーストラリアのコメディがハリウッドを魅了し、ポーホーガン氏のクロコダイル・ダンディ映画シリーズに続き、Yahoo Serious氏というコメディアンが「ヤング・アインシュタイン」という1988作映画を世界中に大ヒットを記録し期待されたが、1990年に入ったら続々と映画がこけ、キャリアが自然消滅してしまった。が、、、ヤフーの登場につれて同氏が再び現れ、同サイトを無断で名前を使用したとして著作違反として訴えたが、敗訴して改めて公の場で見えなくなった。

    g’day Australian English G’day is the typical Australian greeting, used at any time of the day or night upon meeting another person. It is arguably the most famous example of Australian English.     豪キャブラリー： Bikie

    1970・80年代のオーストラリア製「Mad Max」映画シリーズの影響によって一時外国ではオーストラリアと言えばワイルドなオートバイ・ギャングの印象が深かったと思う。 　しかし、本当はかなり違って、映画に出るようなギャングがなく警察の取り締まりが極力に厳しくそもそもバイク乗る人口が車に比べて極めて少ない。 　でも、存在するのは違いない。そして、アメリカなどと同じようなバイカーがいるが、独特オージー英語らしくバイカー(biker)と呼ばれるではなくバイキー(bikie)と言う。
