「やばいリンガル」　Beauty （美）

　オージー英語って、多くの言葉がオーストラリア独特な使い方があって、ほかの国で話す英語と言葉が同じでも意味がまったく違うことがたまにある。ここでは、その例を数多く紹介します。今日は、Beautyの誤解について見てみます。

  • 野生コアラ保護地区用に植えられた数千本の苗木が「葉っぱ泥棒コアラ」に食べられちゃった！

    オーストラリア、ニューサウスウェールズ州にある園芸店で野生コアラ保護地区のために育てられた苗木数千本が「泥棒」コアラに食べられちゃったことはオーストラリア放送協会が報道した。 園芸店店長ハンフリー・へリントン氏が保護地区用に育ってられた苗木が毎晩少しずつなくなっていたことに気づいたが、理由が思い浮かべなかった。 そして、ある日に出勤したら、動けないほど暴食したコアラが苗木植木場所近くに見つけて、謎が解けた。 その時、「クロード」と名付けてそのコアラを近くの森の中にある安全場所までに動かしたが、二日後、再びクロードが園芸店で表れ、苗木を食べて、現行犯逮捕だった。 へリントン氏によるとクロードコアラが何千本の苗木を食べて園芸店に豪ドル約6000ドル（約56万円）の被害を与えた。 コアラ防止対策として、園芸店にネットかけるという。 食べられた苗木がコアラ用の「バンガローコアラズ」保護地区作成のために使われるはずだった。幸いに食べられた苗木が今年地植え用のものじゃなかったので、保護地区の予定にあまり大きな影響がないようだ。 元記事 Claude the koala eats thousands of nursery seedlings intended for NSW wildlife corridor　（英語）

A school canteen in Australia is called a “tuckshop,” and a crate in which food is stored is called a “tuckerbox.” Australia’s arguably most legendary dog was one that sat on a tuckerbox in a small town called Gundagai in the state of New South Wales.     Up yourself, up someone Australian English To be up yourself means to have an over-inflated opinion of your own value. To get up someone, however, means to get angry at them, or to rebuke them. 日本語 Up yourselfは、自己評価が高過ぎるという意味。Get up someoneは、人に対して叱るまたは怒ること。 Plain English 1) Up yourself: Haughty, an over-inflated opinion of self-worth, overly proud. 2) Get up someone: To rebuke or admonish, get angry with.     豪キャブラリー： Bloody Oath

    　 Bloody oathはオージー英語では賛同する時に使う協調的な表現のひとつだ。厳密に言えば「血を結ぶ誓い」という意味だが、実際にそのような使い方はしない。Blood oathという少しだけ省略したバージョンもよく使われている。気持ちを強調する表現だ。 　また、別意味としてbloody oathは豪産リキュールがある。そして、数々の映画賞を受賞した第二次世界大戦を舞台とした1990年作の映画Prisoners of the Sun (アンボンで何が裁かれたか)の豪題でもある。
