Atlantis Marine Park on the outskirts of the Western Australian capital of Perth would have to be one of the less successful — and lesser-known — projects that Australian and Japanese organizations have carried out together down through the years.
Atlantis Marine Park was a marine mammal park set up in 1981 by Alan Bond, a business tycoon and Australian of the Year who would become Australia’s richest person and a criminal around his halycon days in the 1980s, and Tokyu Corporation, a Japanese general contractor.

Perth was growing rapidly.
Blessed with a sun-drenched climate, experts forecast what was then regarded as the world’s remotest city was predicted to boom.
Atlantis Marine Park, with its dolphin shows, swimsuit clad bevy of workers and Perth’s pristine climate, was supposed to skyrocket from its location in the district of Two Rocks.

Well, the City of Light did have a great decade, being central in the mining industry that has supported Australia’s economy since the mid-19th century, as well as wresting the America’s Cup out of the 132-year-long stranglehold the New York Yacht Club had held it in up until 1983.
But the Atlantis Marine Park never quite became the drawcard its operators had expected.
When dolphins at the park calved, the pressure brought upon operators due to regulations regarding care of the marine creatures was overbearing.

The park became unmanageable and shut down in 1990.

Tokyu, then feeling the brunt of a collapse in Japan’s over-inflated asset bubble at the end of the 1980s and early 1990s, was keen to get out.

Indeed, the Japanese giant funded what was then a unique project to release the park’s dolphins back into the wild.

After some hiccups, the program ultimately went on to succeed and become a model for dolphin care.

Now, Atlantis Marine Park is deserted, a fate it shares with many bubble-era theme parks in Japan.

Nothing concrete has been decided as yet, but plans are to keep the King Neptune in place and develop around the one-time lookout.

Big Pelicans

Does Australia Celebrate ‘G’dayween’ Instead of Halloween?
