　花、蝶々、草、土、木なども全部チョコレートで創られた「ガーデン」がメルボルンで21日付に出来たとエイジ紙が報道した。
　メルボルン市にあるセーバー・チョコレートとペストリー・スクール校長カーストン・ティッバルズ氏が600キロのチョコレートを使って3ヶ月かけてチョコガーデンを作った。
　費用が莫大だったので「言いたくない」と同氏が笑いながら言う。　
　同校は、世界中多くのケーキ大会に出場したり、「ケーキ彫刻」や「ケーキ・アート」に熱心。

    　ボクシング・デーは１２月２６日にあり、クリスマスの翌日であり、オーストラリアをはじめ、イギリスも北欧数カ国では祝日となっているが、日本でもアメリカでもほとんど知られていない。 　ボクシング・デーがある国々の中でも「何でボクシングだろう？」と聞かれる。 　スポーツのボクシングかなと思えば、そうでもなく、実際にスポーツでも殴り合いでも全く関係ない。オーストラリアの象徴一つであるボクシング・カンガルー、残念。（ちなみに、ボクシングが実際にカンガルーにとって非常に残酷な行為であり、オーストラリア国内では今禁止されている。） 　実は、このボクシングの由来がボックス（箱）にある。 　元々クリスマスの翌日で、教会が貧しい人たちのために寄付を募ったクリスマスプレゼントのボックスを開ける日であったことから”Boxing Day”と呼ばれるそうだ。 　オーストラリアでは、真夏のボクシング・デーが商業的でもスポーツ的でもお祭りの日のようだ。 　書くとしては「ボクシング・デー・セール」でバーげーン・セールが盛り上がり、一年のうちの一日売り上げが最も多い日だ。 　そして、ネット上で「Cyberボクシング・デー・セール」も行い、消費税課税が免除される海外小売に抵抗するためオーストラリア国内小売業が開催するイベントだ。 　また、スポーツがすごい。夏季国民的なスポーツであるクリケットの最も重要な一日と言えているボクシング・デー・テスト・マッチが毎年メルボルンで（5日間の試合）初日が行なう。その日、9万から10万人の観客が観賞する場合がある。 　なお、シドニーからタスマニア島州都であるホバートの間のヨット・レースが開始日となるのもボクシング・デーだ。 さらにボクシング・デーについてはこちらへ。

    豪国民食であるミートパイを称えるBig Pie

    　元イギリス植民地だったせいかもしれないが、オーストラリア料理の発達が極めて最近のものであるが、昔も今でも「国民食」と呼ばれても良いほど愛されている食べ物がミートパイだ。 　ミートが基本的にビーフだがチキンもラムやポークもよく食べられているし、各種の野菜もグレービーが定番の材料となっている。量産ミートパイが大人気だが小さな街中パン屋さんも自家製パイも普通であり、主食としても間食としても食べられている。 　全国どこでも自家製のミートパイが作られているが量産物以外地域限定というようなものがあまりない。しかし、クイーンズランド州ゴールド・コースト市ヤタラという所でミートパイが目立つ理由は味だけじゃなく、そこにミートパイを称える「Big Things」のひとつであるBig Pieの所在地だ。 　Big Pieは直径4.5メートルでありパイ屋の前に高さ約10メートルのポールの上に設置してある。Big Pieが設置してあるYatala Pie Shopは歴史130年であり、自称「オーストラリア一のパイ屋さんだ」。おまけ、ドライブ・スルーで買える。同パイ屋さんが観光名所となっている。 View Larger Map The Strine Why Atorkin: Natchrule Strine Famous Yatala Pies
