Bowie And Balaclavas

Our new years started off with the amazing David Bowie Is exhibition in Tennozu Isle, an saw me doffing the balaclava to ride my bike in the bloody cold. Bowie loved Japan and had a home in Australia, so he linked both countries.

I’m enjoying going to distant places, and having a fold-up affords me the option of getting on the train if I can’t be bothered riding home.

I wish I’d gotten into cycling much earlier as it allows you to see an entirely different world.

Life is good at the moment, and I get the feeling this is going to be a great year ahead.

    Chunderは、一時的にオージー英語の有名な例として一世風靡した言葉である。 　Chunderを有名としたのは1980年代前半世界中に大ヒットしたMen at Work曲Down Underのコーラスに現れたことだった。たまたまchunderはunderと同音であり、同曲の歌詞によるとオーストラリア（ようするにダウン・アンダー）では男がやるのはchunderだった。しかし、chunderっていったいなんだろう？実は「吐く」ということだ。 Chunderが歌詞となっているMen at Workのプロモーション・ビデオをご覧になってオージー英語の勉強にもなるかもしれないね、、、 　朝から気持ち悪い話をして申し訳ない。

    豪キャブラリー： Hooroo

    Hoorooは、スペルや発音などにより一瞬でオーストラリアのシンボルであるカンガルーと何らかの関係があることを思わせる人は少なくないが、全く違う。 実は、hoorooはバイバイのことです。人と離れる時、軽く言う言葉、「じゃね」と同じような雰囲気でありながら、オージー英語としてかなり古く感じるので実際に使用回数が減っているだろう。年配の方がまだ良く使う言葉けど。

    豪キャブラリー： Littlies

    　日本語では「大人」という言葉に対し「子供」を「小人」という風に表現してもおかしくない。オージー英語でも、まさしくそのような使い方があり、littliesは子供、ようは「小さい人たち」という表現の仕方がある。ちなみに、「小人」はdwarfかmidgetという言葉を昔使ったがいずれも現在では侮蔑にあたるのでlittle peopleという表現が正しいとされているが、彼らは決して子供ではない。

    May is my favorite month of the year in Japan: it’s generally warm, dry and sunny with long days and the landscape is brilliantly verdant and lush, and that applies to my own garden.
