Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Japan this week, but you’d barely have known it.
Despite repeated claims of the Japan-Australia relationship being stronger than ever, Turnbull’s trip went almost unnoticed by the Japanese media.
Turnbull toured an Air Self-Defense Force base with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, seeing first-hand the Australian-made Bushmaster vehicles that Japan uses.
The two right-wing leaders also threw a joint luncheon made using pricey Australian ingredients with Japanese-influenced dishes.
Tickets for the invitation-only luncheon held by the Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee were a hefty 35,000 yen per person.
Turnbull might not have done much, but he got a decent feed out of the visit.

    豪最も居住に適した都市メルボルンの楽天地がロケとしたテレビ番組

    多くの調査ではオーストラリアメルボルン市が世界で最も居住に適している都市と選べる。 メルボルン市内で最もきれいな地域の一つがダンデノング山脈である。ここでは、1970年代・1980年代にて当時豪全国で最も人気それぞれ俳優・女優が主役となってテレビ番組のロケ地となっていた。 どちらの番組にしても目玉道具が同地域内で走るSLパフィング・ビリーであった。 残念ながら、どちらの番組の視聴率が低くいずれも１シーズン限りでピリオドを打った。 Melbourne’s Dandenong Ranges, “The Hills,” were the settings for two relatively obscure and unrelated TV shows in the 1970s and 1980s. “Solo One” was a spin-off of the successful “Matlock Police” with Paul Cronin reprising the role of Gary Hogan stationed in Emerald before he moved on to the far more successful part of Dave Sullivan in “The Sullivans.” Meanwhile, “Come Midnight Monday” was set in Cockatoo and featured Australia’s then-darling Sally Boyden in one of her rare post-“Young Talent Time” roles. The show ran in 1982, the year before Cockatoo was destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

    　オーストラリアで「最も気まぐれな田舎町」と言われてもおかしくないニューサウスウェールズ州パークスで故ロック王者エルヴィス・プレスリー氏を称える南半球最大の「プレスリー・フェスティバル」が9日付から行なう。 The Parkes Elvis Festival, a series of events marking Elvis Presley, the late King of Rock’n’Roll, will be held in the central New South Wales town of Parkes, arguably Australia’s quirkiest municipality, from Jan. 9. 　もはやパークスの恒例な行事となった「プレスリー・フェスティバル」は初回のちょうど20年前に約200人しか来なかったが年々大きくなり開催中の五日間では同町人口約１万人が３倍となり３万弱がやってくるようだ。 The Parkes Elvis Festival, now an important annual event, attracted about 200 people when it was first held 20 years ago, but now swells by threefold the town population of 10,000 over the five days it’s held. 　プレスリーのそっくりさんパレードかコンサートやプレスリー氏の妻だったプリシラさんをモチーフにする「ミス・プリシラ」コンテストなど、祭り関連約150行事が披露される。 About 150 events are held in conjunction with the festival, including an Elvis lookalike parade, concerts and the Miss Priscilla contest seeking to find a woman who closes resembles Presley’s wife, Priscilla. 　多くの国同様オーストラリアでもプレスリー氏が生存期に比べて1977年死後から人気が上がったが、実際にプレスリーがオーストラリアに行くことはなかった。 As with…

    For decades, Japan had a professional basketball team called the Super Kangaroos, and true to the team’s name, it made great leaps at times. The Matsushita Electric Super Kangaroos, which would later be renamed the Panasonic Super Kangaroos, were founded in 1951 and competed in Japan’s top company and professional leagues, the old company-based national competitions, JBL Super League from 2000 to 2007 and then the successor Japan Basketball League where it would eventually relocate and change its name to the Wakayama Panasonic Trians.     OECD最低火力発電所周辺にぴったりのBig Cigar

    　ビクトリア州東部チャーチルは、歴史50年も無い町が2005年に「ＯＥＣＤ最低火力発電所」とされたハーゼルウッド発電所のベッドタウンとして短い間でも（必要ない？）注目を浴びた。公害が心配な地域では、ぴったりな「Big Things」がある。巨大葉巻のBig Cigarだ。 　同町は故英国首相ウィンストン・チャーチル氏に名づけられて、同氏の象徴だった葉巻がBig Cigarのアイディアの生まれだ。最初、町内５ヶ所で巨大葉巻を立てる予定だったが、結局一つだけになった。 　同町は、約3年前放火によって始まった山火事が起こり、11人も死亡となり、火事が広域に渡って害を与えた。 煙の出方が間違っているBig Smoke 大きな地図で見る

    The Spirit of Australia, the flying…dinosaur? 　オーストラリアの魂が以前から言われている「飛んでるカンガルー」ではなく「飛んでる恐竜」って？ええ？飛んでるのは考えRooじゃないの？ Australia’s fauna is unique, and that trend may even extend back hundreds of millions of years to the Cretaceous period, at least in terms of naming patterns. 　皆が分かるようにオーストラリアの動物が特有だ。そして、その独特さが1億年以上前の白亜紀に及ぶかもしれない、、、少なくともネーミングの面では。 One of the few known endemic Australian dinosaurs was discovered only recently; 1996, to be precise.
