Australia’s Rohan Dennis Retains World Time-Trial Championship Title

Australia’s Rohan Dennis retained his UCI Road World Championships Men’s Time Trial title with a blistering win in Yorkshire, England.

Dennis was racing for the first time since his sudden withdrawal during Stage 12 of the Tour de France in July.

Few expected the reigning champion to defend his title, but Dennis averaged 49.7 km/h over the 54 km course to win by more than 1 minute over his closest rival.

“It’s been a long route to get here since July,” Dennis told a news conference. “There are a lot of people to thank. It’s not just been tough for me, it’s been tough for them too. It’s really special to back up this year and come here in the best possible shape to defend this title and show that I haven’t hung up the bike.

Dennis is Australia’s second multiple time trial world champion. Mick Rogers was a three-time winner from 2003-2005.

    Kangaeroo won’t be doing much riding along the Tama River for a while. For the next few weeks, it will be back in the homeland again. Riding will be a bit of a challenge while there. But also a bit exciting! Oz is far stricter on policing road rules than Japan. It will be interesting to see whether Kangaeroo can adapt to the differences. Kangaeroo grew up in the Dandenong Ranges, which are apparently a cycling Mecca for Melburnians, though it wasn’t the case back in the day (at least to the author’s knowledge).   • CHAMPIONS! Tigers Premiers 2019 as Dimma’s Dynasty Does us Proud

    Richmond had its greatest-ever Grand Final-winning margin, smashing the Greater Western Sydney Giants by a whopping 89 points, winning 114-25. The Tigers overcame an injury-riddled season to demolish their closest rivals and establish a powerful dynasty. Dustin Martin won the Norm Smith Medal for being the best player on the ground, his second medal following on from his win in 2017, when the Tigers ended a 37-year premiership drought. Damien “Dimma” Hardwick’s Dynasty, you’ve done us proud.

    Up There, Kazari!

    Australian Sports Day was a fantastic event held at Komazawa Olympic Park yesterday, and I got to go and enjoy some of the proceedings that were a decorative display, (or should I say kazari?), of some of Down Under’s favorite pastimes. The day itself was a ripper, starting with explanations, demonstrations and games of cricket, moving on to games of footy and then ending with a netball exhibition, with sales of Aussie foods, wear and fare such as meat pies and banana bread and cuppas from Club Australia‘s Tad Watanabe and the Australia Cafe van.     　約7年目の2011年に、カデル・エヴァンス氏が世界で最も有名な自転車レースであるツール・ド・フランスで初めてオーストラリア人として総合優勝者となったことを機にオーストラリアでMAMIL族が大幅に増えた。 　MAMILはMiddle Aged Men in Lycraの頭字語であり、全身にスパンデックスを着る中年おっさんという意味だ。 　今、オーストラリアをはじめ世界中に慢性している。 　エヴァンス氏が優勝した時は34歳で、第二次世界大戦後の最長年齢優勝者であり、準おっさんとも言えるかもしれないので、多くのオーストラリア人おっさんも自分が自転車なら行けるんじゃないかと思ってMAMILブーム現象の一助となったじゃないかな？ 　MAMILの特徴がメタボ体系でむちむちに高級レースチームのユニフォームを着て、超高い自転車を持つがゆっくりと走る。 　中年の危機の一種の現れなどで小ばかにされることが多いが、心理学者などが多くの中年男性がMAMILになったことによって運動ができ、他人と社会的に接するので極めて肯定的な現象として見ている。 　そこで、オーストラリア人の映画監督が世界中のMAMILについてドキュメンタリ映画を製作し、今米国で絶賛上映中。その中に登場するMAMIL一人がうつ病の真っ暗中でのサイクリングが人とつながせて、運動でエンドルフィンを分泌したので間違いなく自分の命を救ったという。 　MAMILの他、英語圏のサイクリング・スラングや専門用語が豊富であり、面白いかもしれない。奥が深い世界。言われてみれば、日本語のサイクリング・スラングもたくさんあり、日本の自転車関連世界も興味深いと言える。それがまた今度にしよう。 　とりあえず、冬の終わりが見え始まって、春が来るとMAMILが続々と近所に表れてくるだろう。見苦しいところではあるが、肉体的にも精神的にも健康的であることを考えて寛容的に見てみよう。 MAMIL – Official Trailer from Demand Film on Vimeo.     Boomerang Shrine And Shooting The Rapids

    Mrs. Kangaeroo and I got another wonderful experience shooting down the rapids in the delightful Saitama Prefecture town of Nagatoro, which is also home to a shrine hoping to draw people back with something of an Aussie touch. Boomerang Kaeru Shrine, just outside Nagatoro Station, is dedicated to the worship of frogs, but is actually a play on words. The Japanese for frog is kaeru (蛙), but also a homonym for returning home (帰る), hence the boomerang, which (allegedly) returns to the thrower upon being hurled. (This is a story for another day). Also got to find some Engrish that appealed to my eternal schoolboy side.
